Job Summary The Cartographer is responsible for creating accurate and detailed maps using various tools, techniques, and geographic data. The role involves collaborating with surveyors, geographers, and GIS specialists to ensure precision and reliability of produced maps. Department Overview The Global Water Security Center (GWSC) seeks a cartographer passionate about addressing global environmental challenges by translating complex information into compelling visual stories. The candidate will design and prepare maps, charts, and spatial information databases that illustrate water, food, energy, and health dynamics worldwide to inform policy and decision makers. Required Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree and some experience in cartography, GIS, geography, or environmental studies. Skills and Knowledge Applying cartographic design principles (color, design theory, typography, map projections, thematic and statistical mapping, topographic and reference mapping, visual hierarchies). Evaluating and summarizing complex data from multiple sources. Collaborating with data analysts and scientists to define analysis questions. Proficiency in GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS Pro, 3D GIS, ArcGIS Online, ESRI Developer Platforms, or QGIS. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, Flash). Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities with keen attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications Preferably three (3) years of experience creating cartographic products for local government, nonprofit programs, schools, or similar contexts. Experience with professional tools such as ERDAS, RemoteView, ENVI, SOCET GXP. Experience with Apple Final Cut Pro X, Map Publisher, and other interactive graphics enablers, languages, or tools. Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R (plus). Experience in web development or familiarity with data visualization tools.
