Marketing Statement Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The hospital is comprised of 545 beds and is a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station and a 911 Receiving Hospital. Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position Under varying levels of supervision with varying degrees of difficulty and latitude for independent judgment, supervises and performs work to provide physical security, safety, loss prevention and maintenance of order, in accordance with corporate and network/facility orders and procedures. Uses computers and operates electronic security and safety monitoring systems and other equipment and devices. May operate a motor vehicle to perform duties. All personnel perform related work, including performing the duties of lower Assignment Levels and subordinates. Under direction, is responsible for planning, developing and/or implementing security programs involving the supervision and coordination of security staff of a broader assigned area. Examples Of Typical Tasks Patrols designated areas of assigned locations, public buildings, other facilities, and surrounding areas to maintain order, preserve the peace, and safeguard life and property against fire, vandalism, theft, etc. Reports observed security and safety hazards and conditions, including but not limited to, fire safety. Screens employees and visitors. Operates, monitors, and maintains security equipment. Gives routine information to visitors and clients and directs them to the proper individuals and offices. Discourages and ejects loiterers and disorderly persons. When appropriate, arrests and issues summonses to law violators on premises. Transports, escorts and/or arranges for transport of persons in custody to police precincts and has arrests recorded on police blotter. Prepares and transmits all necessary documents relating to arrests. Testifies in court on arrests. Make written entries into location log books. Responds to and reports emergency and security instances and unusual occurrences by telephone or radio and makes subsequent written reports. Assists in implementing the Emergency Action Plan. Coordinates with Fire Safety Directors. As required, provides assistance to the sick, injured, mentally and physically disabled, and calls for emergency assistance, ambulance and/or medical attention, when necessary and completes and forwards forms. If properly certified and authorized by the health care setting, may administer first aid. Completes and forwards requisite paperwork. Records daily actions in memo book. Maintains records/daily logs of persons entering or leaving building outside regular hours of employment. Maintains bulletin boards in their area by adding and removing materials to keep information current. May make clock rounds, as required; may control vehicular traffic on grounds and/or premises. Monitors and reports unusual events from security systems, as required; distributes, monitors, maintains, secures and ensures accountability for assigned equipment and property. May monitor and control access by the means of electronic security measures, such as security video technology; access control technology. May operate hydraulic access devices, as needed. Attends, completes, and maintains State and NYC H+H training requirements. May operate a motor vehicle. May assist in supervising contracted security guards. In the temporary absence of the supervisor may perform the supervisor's duties. Performs related duties, as required. In addition, performs the duties of a Supervising Special Officer in Assignment Level I Supervises and evaluates the performance of subordinate staff and security guards; plans and coordinates assignments of staff and equipment. Directs and trains subordinates in their duties and responsibilities; reprimands staff for poor performance and ensures their duties are carried out correctly. Conducts roll call; inspects Special Officers, posts, and assigned work areas. Responds to emergency situations; investigates, supervises and assists subordinates in the handling of serious and unusual incidents; determines if additional staff and/or presence of the police is required. Interprets and enforces policy directives from higher authorities. Prepares, maintains and reviews records, logs and reports regarding patrols, demonstrations, arrests and other incidents relating to safety and security. Prepares and submits reports and recommendations to superiors; keeps superiors and/or agency personnel informed of potentially dangerous or unusual situations. May participate in decisions related to plant layout. May act as liaison to several locations or temporarily supervise an additional location. Appears in court and/or assists other law enforcement agencies on assault or arrest cases. In the temporary absence of the supervisor may perform the duties of such person. In addition to performing the duties of lower assignment levels, as described above, performs the following Formulates and approves security arrangements, regulations and procedures to conform to agency policies and directives. Coordinates with landlord to establish evacuation/fire safety procedures and conduct drills. Conducts frequent inspections to ensure that a safe environment is maintained. Ensures that database access control system ID cards are issued and replaced. Maintains database. Extracts information from computer and video records. Advises Department executives and staff on security matters. Plans, develops, organizes and conducts in-service training programs for security personnel. Identifies training needs based on evaluations of work performed. Maintains liaison with appropriate law enforcement agencies. Prepares and submits budget requests and ensures purchase of equipment, supplies, and repairs. Supervises the preparation and maintenance of a system of records and reports. Conducts special studies and investigations as required. In the temporary absence of the supervisor performs the duties of the supervisor. Minimum Qualifications For Appointment to Assignment Level I: A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a states Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security; or An Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma and eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 1 above. Current New York State Peace Officer certification. For Appointment To Assignment Level II In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Level I, appointment to Assignment Level II requires: Four years of satisfactory experience as a Special Officer, at least two years of which must have been as a Supervising Special Officer, Level I; or Four years of full-time satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Special Note A valid New York State motor vehicle driver license may be required for appointment to certain positions based on the operational needs of the network/facility.
