Plumber II (S)

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position provides facility maintenance support predominantly in the trade area of plumbing. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: performing journey level duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems; performing routine work assignments based on the nature of the location of the needed repair with assignments involving work of special or unusual nature are accompanied by specific instructions; exercising considerable independence in performance of routine work while unprecedented assignments are usually discussed with or supervised by foreman; reviewing work through inspection of work in progress and on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment repaired or installed.

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the "Minimum Education and Experience" listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) listed here in this section are now to be used as "Management Preferences" and to be used to screen for the MOST QUALIFIED pool of applicants.

Management Preferences:

• Documented knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience in the repair, replacement or construction of piping systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
