Overview Job Posting Title: Health, Safety and Nutrition Specialist - Priscilla Pond Flawn Child & Family Laboratory School Hiring Department: Department of Human Development and Family Sciences Position Open To: All Applicants Weekly Scheduled Hours: 40 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt from FLSA Earliest Start Date: Aug 03, 2026 Position Duration: Expected to Continue Location: AUSTIN, TX Job Details The Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory (UT Lab School) is sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences in the School of Human Ecology. The Lab School is an educational, research, and service facility for university students, faculty, and the community. It provides a setting for university students to observe, participate, and study children under the supervision of trained Master Teachers. The Lab School is one of the longest continuously running lab schools in the country (open since 1927), serving over 100 families annually in the Austin metro area. Purpose To maintain all health and safety requirements for the Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory as mandated by TX Department of Health and Human Services licensing regulations and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation standards. Responsibilities Maintain resource room and storage areas for materials related to children’s learning; inventory, organize, and repair materials as needed. Research and order supplies; provide orientation to students and new staff on resource room and storage areas. Lift up to 30 pounds. Schedule, plan, prepare, clean up, and supervise snacks for children; collaborate with families for children with special dietary needs. Make shopping lists, purchase food and supplies, and use a personal vehicle for weekly grocery trips. Maintain inventory of groceries, consumable supplies, and equipment; maintain sanitation requirements for food preparation and keep kitchen clean and organized. Supervise annual health and safety inspections; maintain health and safety requirements per TX DHHS licensing and NAEYC accreditation standards. Prepare and maintain lists for teachers of children with allergies and special medical needs; check first aid kits and smoke detectors regularly. Conduct routine emergency supply/plan checks (e.g., flashlights, evacuation plans, emergency contact cards for children). Sanitize classrooms, children’s bathrooms, common areas, kitchen, and storage areas daily; conduct routine safety inspections of the playground. Schedule monthly fire drills and other safety drills as required by licensing. Do laundry and dishes daily; mop floors; clean carpets and classroom set of blocks twice a year. Coordinate with facilities services for repairs and housekeeping tasks. Substitute for teachers and/or assist in classrooms as needed; greet children and parents on arrival and departure. Assist the director with administrative tasks; answer phones and interface with families and visitors during administrative duties. Manage ProCard use and documentation (purchases, receipts, DEFINE entries). Attend all family and school-related events; maintain Food Manager’s certification; maintain current CPR and First Aid certification. Receive and document 24 hours of professional development annually; complete an annual self-evaluation and discuss with the director; identify growth areas and pursue continuing education; attend at least one professional conference per year. Qualifications Required: High school diploma or GED. Three years of experience working with young children and their families. Willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid certification; willingness to obtain 24 hours of continuing education per licensing; willingness to obtain Food Manager’s Certification. Demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication, collaboration, and organization skills. Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Excel, Word, and Outlook. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in child development or early childhood education. Understanding of current licensing and NAEYC accreditation standards related to health and safety. Experience in a NAEYC-accredited program. Salary Range $40,000 - $42,000 Working Conditions May work around standard office conditions, biohazards, and chemicals. Repetitive keyboard use; manual dexterity required. Lifting and moving up to 30 lbs. Occasional weekend, overtime, and evening work to meet deadlines.
