Production Planner
Coastal Machine & Supply, Inc.
Position Overview
The Production Planner owns the production schedule and the flow of work between programming, scheduling, and the shop floor. This role is the single point of accountability for making sure the right job is ready to run on the right machine at the right time with programs, tooling, and material staged before they are needed, priority work sequenced correctly, and outside processing and purchased material tracked to their need dates. In a high-mix, low-volume environment serving Defense, Space, and Oil & Gas customers, the schedule is the backbone of on-time delivery, and this role owns it.
This is a pure scheduling and production-control role. The Planner owns the plan and the data behind it not the decision of whether a part can be made, the writing of CNC programs, or the supervision of floor personnel. Success is a schedule the floor trusts and runs without being asked, and a leadership team that is no longer manually coordinating daily production.
Core Responsibilities
SCHEDULE OWNERSHIP & CAPACITY PLANNING
- Own and maintain the master production schedule in ProShop across all work centers, keeping it accurate to floor reality at all times
- Sequence jobs against real machine capacity and priority, using ProShop scheduling and Datanomix machine-state data
- Build and maintain a rolling 24 week look-ahead, confirming capacity, material, and programming runway against the order book
- Set realistic, committed internal completion dates and identify capacity conflicts before they impact delivery
- Pull priority and hot jobs into correct sequence and communicate changes clearly to the affected cells
WORK ORDER READINESS & MATERIAL FLOW
- Verify that programs, tooling, fixturing, and material are staged and ready before a job reaches the machine no machine waiting on a missing input
- Manage purchased-material and outside-processing need dates; run the exception report daily and escalate at-risk deliveries to Purchasing or Sales before the need date is missed
- Coordinate the handoff from programming to the floor, ensuring released jobs carry complete, validated travelers and work instructions
- Route jobs so they do not sit in inspection queues they do not require; confirm FAI, CMM, and source-inspection needs are scheduled ahead of arrival
PRODUCTION COORDINATION & COMMUNICATION
- Prepare and run the daily production huddle surface blockers, assign owners and dates, and drive accountability on commitments
- Flag hot and at-risk jobs to the cells and to Quality in advance, through the system rather than reactively
- Maintain priority-customer Open Order Reports as standing, accurate exports
- Serve as the central coordination point between scheduling, programming, quality, purchasing, and material handling to keep production flowing
- Raise issues early with context and a recommended action surface problems with proposed solutions, not just status
DATA INTEGRITY & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
- Maintain the integrity of scheduling data in ProShop so reports and dashboards can be trusted without manual reconciliation
- Track and report on key scheduling metrics: schedule adherence, on-time completion, and at-risk-job visibility
- Surface recurring constraints programming wait, outside-processing lead time, CMM/FAI queue depth with data to support continuous-improvement efforts
- Partner with the Director of Manufacturing to review weekly performance and refine the planning process
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of production planning, scheduling, or materials management experience in a machining or precision-manufacturing environment
- Working knowledge of high-mix, low-volume job-shop flow, including the setup, run, and routing realities of CNC turning and 5-axis milling
- Hands-on experience with an ERP/MRP system for scheduling and work-order management
- Strong proficiency with data and reporting tools, particularly Excel
- Ability to read and interpret job travelers, engineering drawings, and routings well enough to plan operations accurately
- Strong organization, sound judgment under shifting priorities, and the ability to hold departments to commitments without direct authority over them
- Must be a U.S. Person as defined under ITAR (22 CFR 120.62)
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with ProShop ERP
- Familiarity with Datanomix machine monitoring and/or Power BI reporting
- Experience planning in an AS9100 / ISO 9001 governed environment
- Background in Defense, Space, or Oil & Gas component manufacturing
- Exposure to outside-processing coordination (plating, heat treat, NDT) and its impact on lead time
- Prior experience standing up or improving a production-control or scheduling function in a growing shop
