Surgical Technologist

Surgical Technologist for Outpatient Surgery Center. Monday to Friday schedule with day shifts only. Only 8-hour shifts are available; 10 and 12-hour shifts are not an option for this position. The Surgical Technologist applies knowledge of the basic concepts necessary for the performance of the duties expected of the role. This includes understanding normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology as well as the actions of pharmacologic agents. The technologist identifies medications and solutions by name, dosage, and expiration date with a registered nurse. They apply the principles of asepsis and sterile technique in a knowledgeable manner to provide optimal patient care. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining a sterile field, gowning, gloving, and surgical scrubbing according to policy. The technologist assists with skin preparation and draping of the patient, as well as the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies. A thorough understanding of the services provided to patients in relation to their restoration of health is expected. The Surgical Technologist prepares and possesses knowledge of the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures. Demonstrating knowledge, care, maintenance, and storage of special instruments and equipment is essential. The technologist checks sutures and supplies and assists with case set-up while updating surgeons' preference lists. Differentiating sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment is crucial. Cleaning or directing the cleaning and sterilizing of contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies as necessary is part of the role. They also demonstrate knowledge of the progress of specific surgical procedures and display dexterity in the use of required instrumentation. Organization, efficiency, and speed in setting up a sterile field are vital skills. Performing sharps, sponge, and instrument counts is expected, as is anticipating the needs of the surgeon to expedite procedures. The technologist identifies emergency situations and uses sound judgment in responding to emergencies calmly and efficiently. Adherence to established policies and procedures regarding standard precautions and infection control is mandatory.
