Role Overview

Under general direction, the Controls Service Technician 5 is responsible for the service and repair, design, configuration, and operation of complete HVAC building control systems and other low-voltage control sub-systems. This role is accountable for quality, timeliness, and efficiency while developing complex software programs, commissioning systems, and solving operational issues. You will also prepare detailed information and submittals that support customer, consultant, sales, service, and subcontractor understanding of system design and operation.

Johnson Controls is looking for a hands-on field professional to join a collaborative team focused on delivering purposeful solutions that help protect people and property. In this role, you will work at customer sites to install, program, configure, commission, and service fire alarm and fire suppression systems, including Simplex, Fike, Kidde, Inergen, Sapphire, FM-200, and CO2.

Role Overview

This position is responsible for supporting fire alarm and fire suppression projects from installation through commissioning and service. You will coordinate with project managers, customers, and other trades to keep work moving safely, on schedule, and in line with customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, program, configure, commission, and service fire alarm and fire suppression systems at customer sites.
• Execute projects on time and within allocated installation hours.
• Work with the project manager to resolve discrepancies and coordination issues that affect installation activities.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications, software and system programs, schematics, and operational product manuals.
• Coordinate installation activities with other trades to optimize installation time and maintain site progress.
• Attend required site meetings and support project execution with clear communication.
• Train customers on system operation, conduct simulations, and respond to functional questions.
• Provide excellent customer service through consistent communication with district staff and customers.
• Complete project documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Follow OSHA and SimplexGrinnell safety policies and procedures at all times.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and perform other duties as assigned.

• Balance multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail, safety, and customer satisfaction.
• Use your technical knowledge to translate drawings, manuals, and system details into reliable field execution.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three or more years of documented experience in low voltage electrical systems, including Fire/Life Safety systems, Access Control, Nurse Call, and Paging systems.
• Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, submittals, and operational or product manuals.
• Experience using hand tools, test equipment, a multi-meter, a digital analyzer, and commissioning devices.
• Ability to obtain and retain licenses required by national, state, and local codes.
• Ability to perform physical labor, including carrying and moving equipment and tools up to 50-70 lbs.
• Ability to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions, including ladders, scaffolding, high lift equipment up to 40 feet, ducts, crawl spaces, and above ceilings.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, to meet customer requirements.
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to lead and work well with team members.
• Ability to follow safety guidelines and procedures at all times.
• Strong organizational skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to learn quickly.
• Valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company requirements.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
• Ability to travel overnight when required.
