Job Summary: A New Leaf’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of all financial functions for a $50M nonprofit organization with multiple programs, business entities, and significant real estate holdings. The CFO ensures the organization’s fiscal integrity, long-term financial sustainability, and compliance with all regulatory requirements. This role oversees finance, accounting, treasury, investments, real estate finance, and construction project funding while serving as a strategic partner to the CEO, Board of Directors, and executive leadership. Responsibilities: Develop, implement, and execute financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission, vision, strategic plan, and long-term objectives to ensure fiscal sustainability and support organizational growth. Serve as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Real Estate Committee, and Executive Leadership Team regarding organizational strategy, financial sustainability, capital planning, investments, resource allocation, and enterprise risk management. Provide financial forecasting, modeling, scenario planning, and data-driven analysis to support strategic decision-making, organizational growth, operational excellence, and long-term sustainability. Develop and monitor organizational financial performance indicators, dashboards, and key performance metrics to support informed decision-making, organizational accountability, and continuous improvement. Lead the organization's annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning processes while monitoring financial performance against approved budgets and recommending corrective actions as needed. Ensure responsible stewardship of organizational assets and financial resources while balancing mission impact, operational effectiveness, and long-term financial sustainability. Ensure the financial integrity of the organization through sound accounting practices, accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, fixed assets, grant accounting, financial reporting, and month‑end and year‑end close processes. Oversee treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, liquidity management, operating reserves, investments, and debt management. Develop and maintain cash management strategies that ensure adequate liquidity and financial stability to support organizational operations and future growth. Oversee organizational investment portfolios and reserve funds in accordance with Board‑approved investment policies. Manage organizational debt obligations, financing strategies, lender relationships, and compliance with loan covenants. Oversee financial tracking, reporting, and compliance for government contracts, private grants, philanthropic contributions, and other funding sources. Ensure proper allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds and compliance with donor intent, grant agreements, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), and all applicable funding requirements. Partner with Development, Program Leadership, and Executive Leadership to develop grant proposal budgets, financial projections, and financial reports for funders. Oversee the financial management of approximately $95 million in organizational real estate assets, including capital planning, financing, acquisitions, dispositions, and asset management. Direct financial planning, funding, compliance, and cash flow for affordable housing and shelter construction projects, including bond financing, Low‑Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), grants, and other public and private funding mechanisms. Lead long‑term capital planning, replacement reserve planning, and financial sustainability strategies for owned facilities and real estate assets. Conduct financial due diligence for acquisitions, financing transactions, capital investments, strategic partnerships, and other significant organizational initiatives, as applicable. Develop, implement, and continuously strengthen internal controls, financial policies, procedures, and fraud prevention measures to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial integrity. Assess enterprise financial risks and develop mitigation strategies related to funding, investments, insurance, debt, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, and operational activities. Oversee the organization's insurance programs and financial risk mitigation strategies. Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, IRS regulations, charitable registration requirements, IRS Form 990 reporting, grant requirements, Uniform Guidance, and all applicable federal, state, and local financial regulations. Lead the annual independent financial audit, Single Audit, tax filings, and all required regulatory reporting. Oversee financial management systems, accounting software, reporting technologies, and financial processes to ensure operational efficiency, reporting accuracy, strong internal controls, and data integrity. Lead continuous process improvement initiatives that enhance financial operations, reporting capabilities, operational effectiveness, and organizational efficiency. Build, mentor, and lead a high‑performing Finance Department by fostering accountability, collaboration, succession planning, professional development, employee engagement, and continuous improvement. Partner with Program Leadership, Human Resources, Development, Operations, Information Technology, Facilities, and other departments to promote financial transparency, organizational accountability, and shared ownership of financial objectives. Collaborate with real estate, facilities, and construction teams on major capital improvement, development, and infrastructure projects. Serve as the primary financial liaison with external auditors, banking institutions, investment advisors, bond counsel, legal counsel, funding agencies, regulatory agencies, and other financial partners. Prepare and present clear, accurate, and actionable financial reports, analyses, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to the Chief Executive Officer, Executive Leadership Team, Finance Committee, Real Estate Committee, and Board of Directors. Support the Board of Directors in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities by providing financial education, strategic guidance, timely reporting, and sound financial recommendations. Promote a culture of ethical financial stewardship, accountability, transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement throughout the organization. Perform other duties and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license strongly preferred. Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Accounting, or a related field preferred. Experience: Ten (10) years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, including executive-level financial management responsibilities. Minimum of five (5) years leading finance and accounting operations within a nonprofit organization or similarly complex multi‑entity organization preferred. Demonstrated experience managing multimillion‑dollar operating budgets, diverse revenue streams, and complex funding structures. Experience overseeing grant accounting and compliance for federal, state, local, and private funding sources. Experience leading annual financial statement audits, Single Audits, and regulatory reporting. Experience overseeing treasury management, cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, debt financing, and investment management. Experience with affordable housing finance, real estate development, construction financing, Low‑Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), bond financing, or other complex capital funding mechanisms preferred. Experience presenting financial information and strategic recommendations to executive leadership, finance committees, and boards of directors. Demonstrated experience leading organizational change, process improvement initiatives, and financial system implementations. Demonstrated experience leading annual budgeting, forecasting, and long‑range financial planning while partnering with organizational leaders to monitor financial performance and achieve budget goals. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Primarily office‑based position with eligibility for a hybrid work arrangement based on organizational needs and leadership approval. Regular use of computers and standard office equipment. Ability to remain seated for extended periods while performing computer‑based work. Occasional travel to agency locations, meetings, conferences, community events, and other business‑related activities. Position requires flexibility to work outside of standard business hours, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends, to attend Board meetings, committee meetings, organizational events, and other business needs. Occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
