Overview

The Physical Therapist Assistant assists the Physical Therapist in the provision of physical therapy. The incumbent shall perform physical therapy procedures and related tasks that have been selected and delegated by the supervising Physical Therapist. The Physical Therapist Assistant may modify a specific treatment procedure in accordance with changes in patient status within the scope of the Physical Therapist's established treatment plan. The incumbent documents patient progress notes. The incumbent shall safety and effectively provide physical therapy procedures as directed by their supervising Physical Therapist. The incumbent shall address appropriately the age specific needs for all patients. The incumbent will treat patients and families with respect and dignity. Patients pain will be assessed and treated according to the departments pain management policy. It is the philosophy of SEMMC to optimize patients comfort while they are in the hospital. The incumbent will identify and report any patient safety issue when identified. The Physical Therapist Assistant shall provide technical assistance and direction to the Physical Therapy aide, and coordinates the workload in the department as directed.

Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) to join our Acute Care team. In this role, you will work under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to provide high-quality physical therapy services that promote patient recovery, mobility, and overall well-being.

The PTA will perform delegated therapy procedures, monitor patient progress, document treatment outcomes, and assist in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care. This position requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing exceptional service to patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Treatment

• Administer physical therapy treatments and interventions as directed by the supervising Physical Therapist.
• Modify treatment procedures within the established plan of care based on changes in patient status.
• Assist patients with therapeutic exercises, gait training, transfer techniques, and mobility activities.
• Apply therapeutic modalities including hot/cold packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and whirlpool treatments.
• Provide wound care treatments and adhere to sterile technique and blood-borne pathogen guidelines.
• Support patient pain management needs and communicate concerns promptly to the supervising therapist.
• Ensure all treatments are provided safely and effectively while maintaining patient dignity and comfort.

Documentation

• Maintain accurate, timely, and legible patient records.
• Complete progress notes that clearly document patient response to treatment and status changes.
• Record pain assessments and interventions according to departmental standards.
• Ensure all documentation is completed within established departmental timelines.

Patient-Centered Care

• Deliver age-appropriate care to patients across the lifespan, from newborns to geriatric populations.
• Involve patients and families in education and treatment planning when appropriate.
• Promote a supportive, respectful, and compassionate environment for all patients.

Communication & Team Collaboration

• Communicate effectively with patients, families, therapists, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
• Report adverse patient responses or changes in condition promptly.
• Assist in coordinating patient care activities and departmental workflow.
• Provide guidance and technical support to Physical Therapy Aides as directed.

Qualifications

Required Education

• Associate Degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.

Required Licensure

• Current Physical Therapist Assistant license issued by the Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy.

Required Certifications

• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certification.

Experience
