Job Description
The HVAC Technical Instructor promotes high-quality HVAC installation and service by designing and delivering comprehensive technical training. This role develops course materials, leads hands-on, performance-based instruction, and supports students in diagnosing and servicing HVAC systems. The instructor models and reinforces safe work practices while helping technicians, contractors, and apprentices strengthen their technical and troubleshooting skills.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop complete course training materials, including instructor guides, participant guides, handouts, and job aids for HVAC topics.
- Prepare thoroughly for course delivery by coordinating schedules, organizing resources, and planning hands-on, performance-based training activities.
- Instruct students in HVAC installation, service, and troubleshooting using a combination of classroom teaching, demonstrations, and practical exercises.
- Assist students in analyzing HVAC system performance, with a strong emphasis on diagnostics of refrigerant, electrical, and air distribution systems.
- Guide students through troubleshooting and servicing HVAC systems, focusing on safe and efficient diagnostic procedures.
- Evaluate student performance during hands-on training and provide clear, constructive feedback to support skill development.
- Explain and apply air distribution, refrigeration, and electrical theory in practical training scenarios.
- Teach total HVAC system application, including installation, performance analysis, and service best practices.
- Demonstrate proper HVAC servicing procedures, including refrigerant evacuation, piping practices, and system start-up.
- Interpret and teach the reading of electrical schematic diagrams and wiring applications relevant to HVAC systems.
- Instruct on electrical codes, electrical circuitry, and solid-state devices as they apply to HVAC installations and service.
- Teach principles of heat transfer, thermal building construction, psychrometrics, and enthalpy functions in an HVAC context.
- Provide instruction on residential load calculations, duct design, and duct board fabrication and installation.
- Incorporate computer graphics and visual aids into training materials to enhance clarity and engagement.
- Model and reinforce excellent customer relations practices, emphasizing professionalism and clear communication.
- Lead by example in practicing safety in all aspects of the job and demonstrate a total commitment to safe service procedures.
- Develop and refine classroom materials and lesson plans to keep training content current and effective.
- Collaborate as a team player, coordinating with colleagues and staff while managing multiple training tasks simultaneously.
Essential Skills
- Extensive HVAC installation, service, and troubleshooting experience across refrigerant, electrical, and air distribution systems.
- Hands-on experience with air distribution, refrigeration, and electrical theory as applied to HVAC systems.
- Proficiency in total HVAC system application, including installation, performance analysis, and service.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot HVAC air distribution, refrigeration, and electrical systems effectively.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC servicing procedures, including refrigerant evacuation and piping practices.
- Solid understanding of principles of heat transfer and thermal building construction.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematic diagrams and apply wiring applications in HVAC contexts.
- Knowledge of electrical codes, electrical circuitry, and solid-state devices relevant to HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with psychrometrics and enthalpy functions and their application in HVAC system design and analysis.
- Experience with refrigeration piping and refrigerant evacuation procedures.
- Commitment to and practice of good safety procedures in all aspects of HVAC work and training.
- Proficiency in performing residential load calculations and residential duct design.
- Skills in duct board fabrication and installation.
- Experience teaching and training technicians, contractors, or apprentices in HVAC-related subjects.
- Strong classroom instruction skills, including preparation and development of classroom materials.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for clear, effective instruction and documentation.
- Active or inactive State of Alabama HVAC Contractor's Certification.
- Ability to work as a team player and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience using computer graphics or visual tools to develop and enhance training materials.
- Strong customer relations skills and the ability to model professional interaction with clients and end users.
- Experience developing instructor guides, participant guides, handouts, and job aids for technical audiences.

Work Environment
This role is based at a dedicated HVAC training center located in Jasper, Alabama. The instructor works in a classroom and lab environment designed for hands-on, performance-based HVAC training. The facility includes HVAC systems and related equipment used for demonstrations, diagnostics, and practice exercises. The work involves regular interaction with technicians, contractors, and apprentices in both classroom and shop settings. The environment emphasizes safety, professional conduct, and adherence to established procedures while supporting collaborative teamwork and continuous learning.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Jasper, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $42.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
