Job Description
Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

This position is based in a multi-disciplinary unit consisting of 9 beds focused on orthopedic care and 13 beds dedicated to inpatient rehabilitation. During periods of low census in the MedSurg unit, the nurse may be assigned to patients in the rehabilitation unit.

Nurse:Patient Ratios

• 1:4 on MedSurg unit
• 1:6 on Inpatient Rehabilitation unit

Ratios are subject to change based on the level of care required by patients and are reviewed twice a day during staffing meetings.

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)

Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients

• Total knees, hips, and shoulders
• Cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs)
• Encephalopathy
• Lumbar fusions
• Clean medical-surgical patients when necessary

Required Skills and Experience

• Orthopedic experience preferred
• Experience with telemetry monitoring
• IV placement and management
• Foley catheter management
• Dressing changes

Charge Nurse Information

A charge nurse is present on each shift for both units and takes patient assignments as part of their responsibilities.

Patient Care Technicians

Each night rotation includes a Patient Care Technician (PCT) who assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and vital signs. During urgent situations, nursing staff may cover primary care duties as needed.

Respiratory Therapy Equipment

Registered Nurses are expected to troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment. Respiratory therapists manage nebulizer treatments and set up CPAP machines.

Telemetry Monitoring

The unit accommodates telemetry patients, with monitoring conducted off-site by dedicated monitor technicians. Registered Nurses conduct rhythm strip checks once per shift, which are then documented in patient records. All nursing staff are required to complete a basic rhythm course, with monitor technicians alerting the nursing staff to any irregular rhythms.

Shifts & Scheduling

The unit follows a structured scheduling system without the option for self-scheduling. Efforts are made to accommodate flexibility in the nurses' schedules whenever possible.

Weekend and Holiday Requirements

• Every other weekend is required.
• Holidays are rotated to allow staff to spend time with their families.

Floating Requirements

Nurses may be required to float to other MedSurg units within the same staffing ratios when necessary.

Dress Code

Navy blue scrubs are required, and staff must provide their own uniforms.

Orientation

New staff members will complete three days of classroom orientation followed by two precepted shifts on the floor to ensure a comprehensive onboarding experience.
