Police Officer Position
The Black Butte Ranch Police Department is now accepting applications to fill one full-time police officer position. We are interested in candidates who are entry level candidates, certified lateral police officers, or those officers who recently retired in good standing and would like to start a second career.
The Black Butte Ranch Police Department (BBRPD) is a small and unique department located in the Northwest corner of Deschutes County. We are one of two police service districts in Oregon and are responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and tranquility of Black Butte Ranch. The current structure of the Department consists on a Chief of Police, a Lieutenant who serves as the Operations Commander, and four officers. We are additionally supported by an administrative manager and two volunteers.
The Ranch consists of over 1200 homes, two 18 hole golf courses, five pool sites, five dining facilities, two recreation centers, a horse stable, and various other Corporation buildings. All of this sits on 8.2 square miles, just west of Sisters Oregon. The 2020 US Census reported a population of 260 full-time residents however, our summer population can grow to 5,000 people.
In addition to our duties on the Ranch, we are often called to assist our surrounding law enforcement agencies in Sisters, Camp Sherman, Suttle Lake and beyond. In 2025 we responded to 448 calls for service off of the Ranch.
Because we are small our officers have the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of a modern police department. Here are a few of the things each one of our officers is involved in on a regular basis:
- Community Engagement Activities - Handing out stickers and other swag to children while on patrol, handing out free hotdogs on National Night Out, jumping in on a kids baseball game, attending the annual Black Butte Ranch Easter Egg hunt, and Fourth of July celebration.
- Traffic Enforcement - Our officers enforce traffic law both on and off the Ranch. As an active member of the Central Oregon MATT (Multi-Agency Traffic Team) our officers are encouraged to participate at all MATT events. Each month the MATT focuses on either speed enforcement, distracted driving, occupant safety, or DUII enforcement throughout Central Oregon. Through our involvement with this team, we are able to help make the roads of both Black Butte Ranch and Central Oregon safer for everyone.
- Criminal Investigations - At BBRPD you are not just the initial responding officer, our also the investigator. Our officers are responsible for investigating their own cases and are supported in working towards making an arrest and obtaining a successful prosecution.
- Regular Training Opportunities - The department offers training to its officers on a regular basis both on and off site. We attend training events at Deschutes County Sheriffs Office, Bend Police and Oregon State Police. The department also has its own firearms range and conducts scenario based live fire drills annually.
- Specialty Assignments - Our officers have the opportunity to assist the department by taking the lead in certain specialty assignments that may be handled by a supervisor at a bigger agency. Examples include: department coordinator for Axon Taser and body cameras, Public Information Officer, Traffic Safety Grant Coordinator, Wellness Coordinator, and Community Relations.
- Close Relationship with Black Butte Ranch Fire Department - Our department maintains a close working relationship with BBR Fire. Our officers are often stopping by the fire station to share a meal or tease them about getting to call after the police department. Our Wednesday Kids Program during the summer is a cooperative venture between the police and fire department and held at the fire station.
