The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN OR Expert I is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN OR Expert I is responsible for Operating Room responsibilities as detailed herein. The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN OR Expert I works on complex surgical procedures in the Operating Room. The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN OR Expert I establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.

Responsibilities:

• Serves as a role model of professional nursing practice by serving as a recognized unit leader in one or more of the following areas: clinical expertise, teacher, specialized resource nurse, and/or evidence-based practice. Consistently gives appropriate feedback to all members of the health care team and participates in the nursing peer review process. Promotes change that enhances the quality of patient care and the unit environment. Serves on teams and leads successful teams as a part of daily practice. Demonstrates highly developed clinical assessment and analytical skills within the context of Relationship Based Care. Actively participates in shared governance at unit level and serves on hospital-wide councils.
• Identifies opportunities for clinical quality as well as workplace improvement. Applies evidence-based practice as a regular aspect of professional practice. Serves on or leads teams that launch innovations in patient care or support a healthy workforce.
• Builds and mends relationships among colleagues within the framework of a healthy workplace. Role models keen cultural awareness including preventing and addressing horizontal violence and impairment. Maintains a conscious balance between work and personal life through prioritization and delegation of responsibilities.

Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction of the patient experience in daily work.
• Demonstrates superior knowledge of the OR environment and equipment.
• Performs charge nurse role and runs OR service line in absence of the clinician.
• Performs scrub role (requirement for RNs hired on or after July 1, 2023).
• Required to take mandatory call nights/weekends.
• Belongs to at least one department or hospital committee.
• Demonstrates knowledge of department fiscal requirements.
• Participates in decision-making activities related to evaluating and acquiring surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
• Collaborates with other health care professionals in the development of surgical budgetary requirements.
• Demonstrates skills in organizing and coordinating the effective use of personnel and materials.
• Develops, organizes, and delivers continuing education topics and courses.
• *Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
• *Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Shifts worked can be days, evening or night shift depending on the need as well as 8, 10 or 12-hour shifts. We have staff in-house 24/7, however our cases run on a block schedule typically 7a-430p Monday to Friday with urgent or emergent cases in the off hours. New hires are typically hired as 8-hour day shift nurses and then we can adjust hours once orientation is complete and as unit needs dictate. Staff are scheduled to work weekends, and that rotation is about every 6-7 weekends on averages depending on current unit staffing levels. Staff cover call shifts as well with the typical expectation as one call shift per week, with varied hours again based off unit needs. Staff are expected to work at least one holiday per year and take call for one holiday per year depending on unit staffing needs and current staffing guidelines.

• Minimum 4 years experience. BSN preferred.
• Annual completion of a professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system gals, and approved by Unit Director AND UPMC approved nursing certification required within 1 year of hire/transfer and must be maintained OR certification from the UPMC Wolff Learning Academy Center for Nursing Excellence required within 1 year of hire/transfer and must be maintained OR Master's in nursing or DNP. If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of Certification.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
• Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
• Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
• Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
• Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
• Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Basic Life Support OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Registered Nurse Current licensure as a Registered Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
