Founding Product Designer

We're looking for a Product Designer to help shape the user experience of our AI-powered platform. You'll work on interfaces that help distributors and manufacturers work more efficiently, from quoting tools to knowledge bases to customer facing tooling. Full-time Matterhaul is building the AI-native operating system for the physical goods supply chain. Distributors and manufacturers run on disconnected systems, manual re-entry, and tribal knowledge that never gets captured. The software that was supposed to fix that never did. We're changing that. Matterhaul sits above the systems these businesses already run — unifying their data, capturing the operational context legacy software misses, and deploying AI agents across quoting, order entry, procurement, dispatch, and customer updates. No rip and replace. Teams go live fast, and Matterhaul expands until it becomes the system the business runs on. That's the wedge. The vision is bigger: a purpose-built, AI-native platform that doesn't just automate what ERPs do today — it does what they were never capable of. We're a small team with deep roots in this space. Our founders grew up in the trades and spent careers building products for the physical world at Stripe, Verkada, and Cisco Meraki. We're based in San Francisco's SOMA/Transbay neighborhood, in-office four days a week, and we spend real time with the distributors and operators we build for. You’ll sit across the table from customers, watch them use your work, and hear firsthand how it impacts their business. We’re building the product from the ground up. Our design partners are eager to move fast, and we need a founding designer who can immerse in their world—mapping messy, real-world workflows—and turn that insight into a cohesive product and design system. What you’ll do Own end-to-end product design—from discovery and IA to polished UI and shipped features. Build and maintain our design system (components, tokens, documentation). Plan and run user research with design partners; synthesize insights into actionable direction. Prototype rapidly to validate ideas (low to high fidelity in Figma). Support light brand/visual needs: marketing site sections, sales one-pagers, investor materials. Collaborate daily with the CEO (product) and CTO (engineering) to ship quickly. You might be a great fit if you Have been a senior product designer and are excited to be the founding designer. Thrive in zero-to-one environments and have shipped complex B2B SaaS products. Are comfortable designing for AI/LLM-powered experiences (bonus) and software tied to physical-world workflows. Balance scrappy iteration with strong systems thinking. Are pragmatic—not a heavyweight process purist—and can flex process to fit the moment. Communicate clearly, give/receive feedback well, and love working closely with engineers and founders. Must-haves 5+ years in product/UI/UX design (or equivalent impact), including zero-to-one work. B2B SaaS experience; comfort with complex data and enterprise workflows. Comfort and experience working in industries that have been traditionally less tech-forward Demonstrated ability to run research and translate insights into elegant solutions. Nice-to-haves Visual identity/brand chops. Familiarity with AI/LLM UX patterns. Understanding of accessibility best practices. Experience collaborating on marketing sites, decks, or sales collateral.
