Chief Accountant

PRIMARY DUTY: Responsible for the accounting and financial reporting functions under general direction. Supervises and manages assigned area of the department. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong knowledge in the application of governmental Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements in financial/accounting transactions. Strong knowledge of accounting theory, principles and practices, and their application to a wide variety of accounting transactions and problems in municipal government accounting functions. Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to municipal government finance. Must have intermediate to advanced personal computer and software application skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft office, and ability to learn new computer information systems. Skilled in compiling and preparing financial reports. Ability to implement and administer financial accounting systems. Effective supervisory and leadership skills. Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing including use of good grammar and conveying information in a tactful, concise, and professional manner. Ability to organize assignments and multiple tasks, prioritize and work independently. Must be flexible and adaptable to change. Must have polished and proven people skills with a focus of being able to interact well with a diverse population, provide excellent customer service, ability to diffuse conflict situations, and problem resolution. Must have the ability to maintain positive working relationships with fellow employees. Must demonstrate excellent teamwork skills. Must be detailed oriented. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field At least four (4) years of government accounting experience preferred. Two years of supervisory experience preferred. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
