Fleet is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, with satellite offices in Seattle, WA and Arlington, VA. Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer – Electrical to own the detailed design validation, analysis, and optimization of Fleet’s data center power distribution topology from utility through the rack. This role requires a deep understanding of Fleet data center power topology—including breakers, PDUs, UPS systems, generators, busways, tap boxes, R‑boxes, and whips—and how these elements behave across normal, maintenance, and failure scenarios. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical engineering fundamentals with practical data center experience, ensuring rack-level power requirements are met, specifications and counts for power components are correct, and failover behaviors are well understood. This role is accountable for end-to-end electrical system integrity, including feed-down simulations, outage analysis, and upgrade impact assessments to optimize uptime SLAs and minimize power stranding. Key Responsibilities Power Topology Ownership & Rack-Level Alignment Develop and maintain a deep understanding of Fleet data center power topology, from utility through medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution, busways, tap boxes, R-boxes, and rack whips, down to rack power supplies and power shelves. Ensure that tap box and R-box ratings meet rack power requirements, including continuous, peak, and redundancy constraints (e.g., N, N+1, 2N). Review and validate rack SKUs and associated power supply or power shelf specifications, ensuring compatibility with upstream distribution (feed counts, breaker ratings, connector types, redundancy configurations). Partner with rack engineering, capacity planners, and operations to ensure that rack layouts and deployment plans are electrically feasible within Fleet’s standard power lineups and site-specific constraints. Configuration, Specification, and Data Accuracy Define, review, and maintain R-box specifications and counts, tap box specifications and counts, and whip specifications and counts for each deployment. Ensure that all specifications and quantities are accurate, documented, and transmitted to capacity planners and procurement teams in a timely manner so they can plan, model, and procure required infrastructure. Create and maintain standardized BOM templates and configuration libraries for electrical distribution components (busways, tap boxes, R-boxes, whips, breakers, PDUs, etc.) tied to specific rack SKUs and power tiers. Collaborate with DCIM and tooling teams to ensure electrical topology, ratings, and connectivity are modeled with high fidelity and kept current. Electrical Failover & Outage Analysis Perform electrical failover analysis across the power chain to ensure that credible outage scenarios (utility loss, generator failure, UPS failure, breaker trips, busway/tap/R-box faults, rack-level faults) do not lead to cascading failures. Analyze breaker coordination, protective device settings, and selective tripping behavior to confirm faults are isolated without compromising redundant paths. Model and validate how breakers, PDUs, UPS systems, generators, busways, tap boxes, R-boxes, and whips behave under fault, overload, and transfer conditions, and identify design or configuration changes to reduce operational risk. Work closely with Site Operations and Facilities Engineering to incorporate lessons learned from real incidents into design standards, operating procedures, and protection settings. Feed-Down Simulation & System-Level Optimization Simulate feed-down scenarios (e.g., loss of a feed, maintenance bypass, partial generator availability, UPS module failures) to understand upstream and downstream effects on the entire power lineup. Use these simulations and scenario analyses to: Keep failure and maintenance events within uptime SLAs. Minimize power stranding by balancing capacity across feeds, phases, and power paths while preserving redundancy. Identify structural constraints or choke points and propose improvements. Translate simulation results into clear requirements and guidance for capacity planning, rack deployment policies, and operational runbooks. Lead or support infrastructure upgrade and expansion impact analyses for electrical systems, including: Adding or upgrading busways, tap boxes, R-boxes, or whips. Upgrading UPS, PDU, or generator capacity. Changing feeder configurations or protection schemes. Quantify the electrical and operational impact of proposed changes on: Available and stranded power capacity. Redundancy levels and single-/dual-corded load behavior. Expected fault and failover behavior across the lineup. Provide engineering input into method-of-procedure (MOP) documents and risk assessments for all electrical changes, ensuring impacts to critical load are understood and mitigated. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Documentation Partner with capacity planners, customers engineering teams, site operations, facilities engineering, and procurement to ensure alignment between electrical design, deployment plans, and capital/operational constraints. Produce clear, repeatable design guides, reference one-lines, and standard topologies for different site types, power tiers, and rack densities. Contribute to internal standards and playbooks covering: Power topology design rules and constraints. Component specification and qualification criteria. Failover expectations, tests, and acceptance criteria. Support incident reviews, design reviews, and vendor evaluations from an electrical systems standpoint. Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. 6+ years of experience in data center electrical engineering, critical power systems design, industrial power distribution, or a similar field involving medium- and low-voltage systems. Demonstrated deep understanding of data center or industrial power distribution topologies, including utility feeds, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, PDUs, busways, tap boxes, R-boxes, and rack-level power delivery. Proven ability to analyze electrical failover and outage scenarios, including breaker coordination, redundancy schemes (N/N+1/2N), and cascading failure risks. Experience validating that rack power requirements (per-rack kW, inlet configuration, redundancy model) are met by upstream infrastructure, including tap box and R-box ratings and whip configurations. Proficiency with electrical design and analysis tools and the ability to interpret one-line diagrams, protection settings, and equipment submittals. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate simulation and analysis results into practical design and operational recommendations. Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document complex electrical concepts and present findings to engineering and operations stakeholders. Preferred Experience in hyperscale or colocation data centers, with exposure to high-density compute (AI/GPU) power distribution challenges. Familiarity with rack power supply and power shelf design, including redundancy configurations, inrush behavior, and interaction with upstream protection. Hands‑on experience with DCIM and asset management tools and integrating accurate electrical data and connectivity into those systems. Knowledge of relevant electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE) as applied to mission‑critical facilities. Prior experience conducting infrastructure upgrade or expansion impact analyses in live production environments, including MOP development and risk mitigation. Understanding of broader data center performance metrics (e.g., PUE, capacity utilization) and how electrical design decisions influence them. Required Traits and Skills Integrity and Ethical Standards: Operate with a high degree of integrity and safety-consciousness in all engineering decisions, especially when affecting live critical environments. Effective Communication: Clearly explain complex electrical concepts and tradeoffs to both technical and non‑technical audiences; comfortable delivering findings to internal engineering, operations, and leadership teams. Operational Paranoia: Anticipate risks, identify vulnerabilities in the electrical topology, and proactively implement mechanisms to prevent and minimize disruptions and safeguard safety, security, availability, and scale. Strategic & Systems Thinking: Understand how local design decisions (e.g., a tap box or R-box configuration) impact the behavior of the entire power lineup and overall uptime SLA. Critical Thinking & Analytical Ability: Use data, simulation, and empirical evidence to drive decisions; evaluate cost, risk, and performance tradeoffs for alternative designs or configurations. Collaboration & Relationship Management: Build strong working relationships with capacity planners, site operations, facilities engineers, vendors, and other partners to drive aligned, high‑quality outcomes. Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical leadership within the electrical engineering domain, mentor peers and junior engineers, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement. Expected Salary Range $120,000-$150,000 Salary + Bonus Fleet Data Centers Employment Fleet Data Center employees enjoy competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, including 100% employer‑covered medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401K program, standard paid holidays, and unlimited PTO.
