Additional Information About the Role Unit Description: 6200 Acute Care Medicine at Barnes‑Jewish Hospital (South Campus), 25‑Bed Unit. PRN Requirements: Maintain PRN employment status by working 24 hours every six weeks. PRN roles require completing BJC New Employee Orientation, Centralized Nursing Orientation, BJH Nursing Orientation, and EPIC Training during the first week of employment, Monday‑Friday, approximately 8 AM‑5 PM CST. Acute Care Medicine manages patients with a full range of clinical issues—significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, and other conditions. Due to patient acuity, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning. Each unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse and is supported by an advanced practice nurse, a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with physicians, nurses, and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care. Role Purpose Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care. Responsibilities Promotes patient- and family-centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and families on managing illness or injury, including post‑treatment home care needs and medication administration. Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development. Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with the interprofessional team, patients, families, or caregivers, in accordance with established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care. Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care, and assesses patient preferences and barriers to care, including values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs. Maintains a constant state of alertness and works safely in this safety-sensitive position.
