Plumber/Steamfitter

Job Purpose This position is a plumbing and steamfitting role performed at the journey level, with responsibilities across medium and low-pressure steam and condensate systems. Responsibilities Perform plumbing duties in compliance with the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code across various pipe materials and sizes. Carry out preventive maintenance and emergency response actions for plumbing systems. Receive duties from a shop supervisor or lead and work independently, with spot checks to ensure quality. Allocate at least 30% of time to steamfitter-related responsibilities. Core Duties (Steam Fitting) Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot medium and low pressure steam and condensate systems. Address components such as convectors, radiators, coils, heat exchangers, steam tables, sterilizers, autoclaves, valves, strainers, and pumps. Possess welding capability if a certified welder. Core Duties (Plumbing) Install, maintain, and repair domestic water systems including boilers, hot water tanks, heat exchangers, radiators, valves, and pumps. Maintain chilled water systems and related equipment. Install and maintain plumbing fixtures (faucets, sinks, bathtubs, toilets, water heaters, garbage disposals). Inspect plumbing systems, shut down safely, and make necessary repairs. Cut, bend, solder, thread, and assemble pipes and fittings. Join pipes using flanges, solder, glue, or welding. Install and repair sewer lines, storm drainage, pipe insulation, and fire protection sprinkler systems. Install and repair gas lines. Qualifications Skilled in plumbing trade tools and equipment. Approximately five years of work experience, including apprenticeship or vocational training. Experience with medium and low-pressure steam systems. Knowledge of steam and condensate properties and maintenance equipment. Ability to use respiratory equipment and work in confined spaces or at high elevations. Minimum Requirements Journey level education or equivalent apprenticeship completion for four years. Four years of actual work in the plumber/steamfitter trade. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficient use of trade tools and methods. Complex troubleshooting of plumbing, hydronic, and steam systems. Understanding of relevant codes. Ability to work from plans and specifications. Respond to emergency calls nights, weekends, and holidays. Work variable shifts, including nights and weekends. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Certifications and Licenses Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license. Preferred: Journeyman card in plumbing/steam fitting or other recognized technical credential. Physical Requirements Regular work in confined spaces or at high elevations. Frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 10 lbs, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. Ability to twist, bend, squat, and grasp forcefully. Perform work outside in variable weather. Wear required uniform and PPE. Work Standards Compliance with California Vehicle Code and Stanford driving requirements. Demonstrate interpersonal skills, promote safety, and adhere to university policies.
