Custodian - part-time - 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. shift; $19.76/hr starting wage Job Description Position Title: Facility Services / Custodian Department: Operations and Maintenance Immediate Supervisor: Custodial Supervisor Summary: Keeps the District's school buildings in such a state of housekeeping excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, etc. in assigned buildings (including but not limited to cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, corridors, stairs, windows, sinks, drinking fountains, carpets, garbage cans, wastebaskets, gym, cafeteria and other areas as directed by the principal or assigned supervisor; clean, mop, wash, buff and vacuum floors). Maintain grounds and perform seasonal ground work (including sidewalk care, snow removal, lawn care, shrubs & landscaping, parking lots, driveways and fencing, trash pick-up). Restock disposable items and provide accurate inventory usage and data (including classroom and restroom supplies such as paper towels, soap and related items; store all supplies, tools & equipment neatly; request additional supplies according to established procedures). Assist visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building in a courteous manner; obtain and set up needed equipment; cooperate and share professionally with other members of the staff. Perform minor adjustments and repairs as needed (proficient in the use of hand tools, small power tools, gardening tools, various types of pipe, wire, lumber, building materials, cleaning supplies, ladders & scaffolds; perform regularly scheduled preventive maintenance, changing bulbs, clearing drains, clearing plugged toilets, adjusting thermostats). Promote energy conservation (turning off lights, closing proper doors, regulating thermostats, checking pipes/fixtures for leaks, checking windows for cracks/caulking). Communicate with Principal/Supervisor or other site personnel or students for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities. Report any damage to school property and any maintenance needs. Assure the security of the building and grounds (lock/unlock gates and doors, check windows, turn lights on/off, rooms and buildings are checked for fire hazards). Exercise knowledge of proper safety techniques (wearing proper personal protective equipment, handling of materials, lifting techniques, use of all equipment and climbing apparatus). Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance. Other duties as assigned. Professional Standards 1. Organizes equipment and work areas. Adjusts schedule to meet facility/staff needs. 9. Minimum Education or Experience High school graduate or GED Previous custodial experience preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Able to prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work. Able to work independently and/or as a team to complete tasks and meet goals. Basic knowledge required to identify building conditions and/or chemicals which could be hazardous. Knowledge of how to safely use, post notice, and dispose of chemicals. Working knowledge of facilities and custodial procedures and processes. Skilled in and knowledgeable of correct use and maintenance of facilities/custodial equipment to accomplish assigned tasks. Able to recognize problems, determine causes, and take appropriate action for resolution. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Basic skills required to make minor equipment and building maintenance repairs. Able to take direction and respond to requests in a courteous and helpful manner. Able to perform basic mathematical skills, such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication to determine weight, volume and distance. Able to read, write and interpret rules, reports and procedure manuals as required to perform assignments. Able to perceive identification numbers marked on material; read and understand numbers and volumes; and transcribe numbers. Able to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. Able to quickly move hands and arms to grasp, manipulate, or assemble products. Able to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting, standing, or lying down. Able to physically exert body over long periods of time. Able to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time. Able to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with the body, arms, and legs. Possess a valid Iowa Drivers' license. Physical Demands Ability to walk/stand constantly. Ability to maintain balance on wet, icy or snow covered surfaces. Ability to perform bending and stooping frequently. Ability to perform overhead reaching up to 74 inches occasionally. Ability to reach out with a wingspan of 36 inches and exert a force of 40 lbs occasionally. Ability to perform twisting occasionally. Ability to perform handling/grasping frequently. Ability to perform fine manipulation occasionally. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs up to 49 inches occasionally. Ability to lift up to 60 lbs from a height of 36 inches up to 49 inches occasionally. Ability to carry 50 lbs up to 10 feet occasionally. Ability to push with a force of up to 100 lbs up to 300 feet occasionally. Ability to push/pull with a force of up to 20 lbs up to 100 feet occasionally. Ability to push/pull floor buffer with vibration up to 15 minutes at a time. Ability to push with one foot while standing on other with a force of 10 lbs. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee works near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. By District Board policy, the district facilities and grounds are to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free zones.
