Senior AccountantThe corporate accounting department at VGM Group enables our organization to operate, grow, and maintain its financial health. The corporate accounting team partners with all business units that form the entirety of VGM Group. This role will be dedicated to VGM Insurance Services, meaning that the focus of the Senior Accountant will be on accounting responsibilities, financial reporting, and more for VGM Insurance specifically.Position Summary: A Senior Accountant for VGM Group, and for VGM Insurance Services specifically, is responsible for monthly financial close, monthly and quarterly financial reporting (internal/external), annual budgeting, and other special and ongoing tasks and projects. The Senior Accountant will take a strategic and service-oriented approach to working with management to provide analysis and advice to leaders. The Senior Accountant will work both independently and in collaboration with others.Reporting Accountability: VP of Finance, VGM Corporate Accounting and Insurance ServicesWorking Location: On-site in Waterloo, Iowa daily.Work Hours Classification: Full-Time Exempt, 8am-5pm Monday-Friday, with additional hours as needed to meet business and job requirements.What you'll do:Complete divisional monthly, quarterly and year-end closings, including complex calculations and journal entries, and performance of financial statement analyses; assist with the preparation and analysis of reporting used for executive team leadership performance reviewsPrepare and/or review monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, financial reports for management and clients, various other financial analysesResearch, interpret, and apply accounting guidance and company policies to ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational accounting standardsPartner with operational and business leaders to provide financial insights, support strategic decision-making, and evaluate business performanceProactively and regularly communicate with clients and stakeholders (both internal and external) to fulfill requests and contractual needsCoordinate and lead Divisional and Company-wide special projects as assigned that will have a broad impact across the organization, including but not limited to internal control implementation, process improvements and business optimization, due diligence, data integrity initiatives, etc.Assist with developing and implementing processes for monitoring and timely communicating financial and operational performance at the site level, analyzing, identifying and communicating areas for operational and financial improvement, and implement mechanisms for tracking of post-implementation resultsIdentify and remediate process and control deficiencies; update policies, procedures and process documentation; communicate process changes to team members affectedCompile and support external auditors' requests for information and documentationMust be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviationsMust be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situationsPerform other duties and complete other projects as assignedWhat will make you successful:Education and experience: Bachelor's degree in Accounting required, Master's degree preferred5 or more years of professional accounting experience showing progressive responsibility in public accounting5 years of professional experience in public accountingCPA highly preferredSkills and competencies: Very strong analytical and quantitative skills; experience with business operations beyond accountingAdapt at project management, organization, and ability to remain calm under duressKeen attention to detail and a dedication to accuracyStrong communication skills; verbal in presenting and written for clarityStrong technology aptitude and comfort level in working with systemsDemonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of an organizationAn interest and ability to learn new things quickly and an ability to interpret and understand complex rules and processesA strong work ethic and flexibility/adaptabilityPhysical Requirements: Operation of office equipment and using technology efficiently such as computers, phones, misc. office equipmentVisual abilities to include reading, distance vision and peripheral visionOccasional travel to business-critical meetings or events.
