The Library Media Specialist must be able to provide the spectrum of services under the general areas of information specialist, teacher, and instructional technology consultant. The job requires working cooperatively with administration, staff, and students to fulfill the concept of a Library Media Center. DISTRICT OVERVIEW Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K – post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $185 million, with a state funding of $10,050 per pupil. This includes a completely confidential, short‑term counseling service that utilizes a practical approach toward problem resolution and is available 7 days a week, with no cost to the employee. Paid holidays; earned vacation, sick, and bereavement days. Longevity pay. Paid "act of God" days, such as snow days. Additionally, the children of employees working 20+ hours, living outside the district's attendance boundaries, are eligible to attend Livonia Public Schools via schools of choice. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Administration in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications. K-12 Library Media (ND) certification Master of Science in Library Science, Master of Library and Information Science, or Master of Information and Library Studies Ability and experience working with students in media centers in public school setting, preferably at multiple grade levels A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships Skills in individualizing instruction Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders Superior verbal and written communication skills MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Creates a welcoming and positive climate and culture in the media center Exhibits a commitment to the District's Shared Vision and Collective Commitments Implies the building media program Develops, organizes, supervises, and provides maximum access for students to the library media center and its resources, in cooperation with building administration Reviews and selects resources to support the curriculum according to district guidelines, as well as supervise production of instructional materials Provides an environment conducive to media use and facilitate information retrieval from a variety of resources within and outside the school. Increase information literacy amongst students and staff, using multiple resources which include digital, visual, textual and technological reference resources Assists students in selecting the most appropriate resources and provide formal and informal instruction including effective search strategies for information retrieval (individual and group instruction in the use of manual and electronic catalogs and indexes and other reference tools in print and non-print format) Helps provide leadership, training, and support to the staff in the use of new and emerging technology, including school website maintenance and integration of instructional technology Works collaboratively with classroom teachers to plan for the meaningful application and integration of information processing skills, research and document/presentation production within the core subject area curriculum Provides opportunities and guidance for students in reading, viewing, and listening activities. Assists teachers and administrators in curriculum development and materials utilization through participation on curriculum committees and consultation with teachers Supervises production of instructional materials Interprets the school media program to students, faculty, administration, and community Keeps the instructional staff apprised of laws and policies related to information usage Participates in activities provided to help the media specialists learn and integrates appropriate and updated technology skills Utilizes technology skills to enhance student learning, teacher collaboration and communication Maintains an electronic inventory of all instructional technology and audio‑visual materials for the school During available instructional periods, provides learning enrichment to students as part of a school's planned intervention for students Serves as the Instructional Materials and Assessment Representative for the school Oversees the ordering, purchasing, inventory, organization, distribution, collection and maintenance of equipment and instructional materials Maintains orderly supply areas housing the school's content‑specific materials Distributes and collects district benchmark assessments and data reports Attends a maximum of two meetings annually with the Academic Services Department Executes other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by building administrator CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association. This position will remain open minimally through June 23, 2026 for consideration of employment for the 26-27 school year.
