JOB DESCRIPTION

YOUR SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul, and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Repair, change, and balance tires on automotive and heavy equipment. Carry out preventative maintenance work to keep equipment in proper working order and perform periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment. Comply with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies; assist in maintaining proper documentation of all waste activities; and elevate concerns to the Shop Manager. Submit requests for parts and supplies, track and report time on various work activities, and complete shop work orders. Purchase parts and shop supplies as a P‑card holder and process invoices and paperwork. Operate personal computers and printers for processing warehouse commodity issue tickets and work orders. Respond to emergency road service calls and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Clean up after repairs and return tools to their proper locations. Perform minor welding, paint, and body repairs as needed. Instruct other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines, and heavy equipment Use of repair manuals Purchasing rules and regulations All waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies Skills in: Use of hand tools and mechanical equipment Replacing, repairing, and installing various components and accessories Documenting work performed and materials used on work orders Performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; customer service Ability to: Operate motor vehicles Troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems Perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance Assist in body and fender repair work Lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend Use appropriate safety equipment Work independently Follow oral and written instructions Communicate effectively verbally and in writing Perform minor welding Operate and perform pre‑trip/post‑trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicles (CMV) with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 lbs. or more after obtaining a CDL Instructional Permit & License Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others

OTHER JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS

During emergencies and natural disasters, the incumbent shall be available to work non‑standard and/or extended hours. The incumbent must possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months. While on duty, the incumbent must be readily available to operate a CMV. The incumbent must also be able to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance. An additional year of experience, for a total of three years’ experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance, is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Pose a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENTS

An acceptable driving record is required. Unacceptable records include: Three or more moving violations in the past three years that accumulate three or more points per violation; Any two convictions of reckless driving in the past three years; A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three years; A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four years. Applicants must participate in a mandatory drug screening upon hire.

COURSE AND TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Applicants hired for a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL) must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. The Department will conduct a pre‑employment query. The costs for the initial CDL training and testing will be paid by the Department. The employee will be responsible for any additional training, re‑test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates within two years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying those costs.
