Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group, Department of Anesthesiology, has an immediate need for fellowship-trained, board-eligible or board-certified cardiothoracic anesthesiologists to join our section of Cardiac Anesthesia on a per diem basis. This position is a good fit for a cardiac anesthesiologist who wants to keep a hand in complex cardiac work in an academic setting without a full-time commitment. The cardiac practice. Our cardiac anesthesiologists support a full-service adult cardiac surgery program, including coronary revascularization, valve repair and replacement, aortic surgery, and an advanced heart failure program with heart transplantation and LVAD implantation. The division covers an established structural heart program (TAVR, mitral and tricuspid interventions) and a busy electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization service. Most cardiac anesthesiologists also provide anesthesia for patients undergoing liver transplantation. Thoracic surgery and major vascular round out the practice. Perioperative TEE is central to the work.

The general practice. Per diem cardiac anesthesiologists, like our full-time cardiac faculty, are not confined to the cardiac operating rooms and cath lab. They also cover general anesthesia assignments at a Level I trauma center, two surgical specialty hospitals within Loma Linda University Health, and a busy ambulatory surgery center. The overall case mix includes major abdominal, orthopedic, vascular, neurosurgical, ENT, and urologic cases, trauma, obstetrics, and non-operating-room anesthesia. Supervision of residents is typically 1:2 with CRNA supervision at 1:2, up to 1:4. Shift assignments are scheduled by mutual availability. Ideally, per diem faculty work the equivalent of 20% to 49% including weeknights, and weekends; shift can be clustered to fit scheduling needs. We encourage the equivalent of one day per week or one week per month, because it keeps per diem physicians familiar with our sites, systems, and colleagues.

The faculty. Per diem physicians hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology. Our cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, and nurses are a close-knit team that plans cases together, reviews outcomes together, and enjoys one another’s company. Per diem physicians are members of that team. You will be oriented by experienced faculty, scheduled alongside people who are glad to have you, and treated as a colleague.

Teaching. Our residents are the reason many of us chose academic practice. Per diem cardiac anesthesiologists supervise residents on their cardiac and general rotations, as well as our ACGME-accredited adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellow. We are looking for physicians who find that work rewarding and who bring patience and high standards.

Compensation. Starting compensation is $300 – $350 per hour, adjusted for weekday, weeknight or weekend shifts. Details are discussed with the department during the recruitment process.

Qualifications. Candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship, be board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology, and hold, or be eligible for, a California medical license. Advanced Perioperative TEE certification or eligibility is expected. We welcome candidates at all career stages.
