Program Specialist ODLS, AmeriCorps – Camp Whitcomb/Mason Hartland, WI, US June 8 – August 21 (seasonal position, Monday–Friday youth programming) Summary The Program Specialist – Outdoor Living Skills is responsible for developing and implementing the Adventure-Based Learning Program during summer camp, which includes a high and low ropes course. AmeriCorps Summary AmeriCorps members agree to complete a term of National Service while supporting Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee programming. Members receive a fixed‑amount living allowance and an education award, which vary by term of service. Responsibilities Account for the location of all youth under direct responsibility when on duty. Use only discipline techniques approved by the Camp Whitcomb/Mason Behavior Management Plan and trainings. Seek immediate medical help for any sick or injured youth. Report medical emergencies as designated by the Camp Whitcomb/Mason Emergency Action Plan. Attend all meals and sit with youth during meals. Act as a positive role model while at the pool, waterfront, archery range, or other high‑risk program area, using safe and appropriate techniques and providing careful supervision. Develop ropes and challenge course programs utilizing low‑ and high‑element challenges. Ensure all programming is developmentally appropriate for the age group you are working with. Ensure youth on the Ropes and Challenge Course use equipment sized for their height and weight. Utilize a wide range of available resources, including backpacks, portable stoves, campfires, scars, tents, outdoor rock wall, low elements, games, initiatives equipment, matches, wood, rain gear, canoes, PFD’s, paddles, bows, arrows, waders, and ropes. Facilitate programs with an experiential education style and a natural progression for learning outdoor living skills and environmental education. Maintain your area of responsibility clean, free of food, and orderly. Submit maintenance request forms whenever repairs are needed. Assist with set‑up and take‑down of camp, including pre‑camp cleaning and landscaping. Maintain the Ropes and Challenge Course, perform quarterly checks, and inspect equipment for safety before and after each group. Education Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Proof of U.S. citizenship, as required by AmeriCorps. Successfully pass background check requirements, including fingerprint screening. Some college, majoring in Education or Recreation preferred. Experience Requirements One year of full‑time experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds. Skills Obtain ABEE certification for rope‑course facilitation. Plan and organize activities for children ages 7‑14. Communicate and work with groups of varying age and skill levels, providing necessary instruction. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational, communication, and team‑building skills. Strong background in education. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards. Physical ability to respond appropriately to first‑aid situations, assist campers in emergencies, and maintain constant supervision, including lifting up to 50 lb. Physical Demands The position requires endurance, prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching. It requires eye‑hand coordination and manual dexterity for handling outdoor equipment, normal hearing and vision for communication, and the ability to lift up to 50 lb. The environment includes exposure to sun, heat, bugs, snakes, bats, and other wildlife. The noise level is usually moderate. Service Environment The service environment involves a camp setting with limited or simple facilities. It requires irregular hours, living in camp, and working in moderate‑moderate noise levels.
