Maintenance Mechanic

Plan and perform a variety of maintenance jobs in University buildings; most of the work involves repairs or replacements.

A general knowledge of maintenance operations, building systems or trades skills equivalent to 2-3 years practical trades training or previous work experience. At least one-year additional practical experience. Must provide own hand tools. A valid driver's license; the ability to drive manual and automatic transmission vehicles.

Repack and replace faucets; open plugged sinks, toilets, drains; disassemble, clean and replace traps. Check water for pH in pools; check water softeners and circulation pump motors. Oil motors, compressors, fans, etc. and change belts in electrical equipment. Check/replace electric switches, lead wires, floor plugs, receptacles, ballasts, sensors. Installation and repair of custodial equipment. Open stuck windows; repair or replace catches and window ropes; install and repair storm and screen windows; patch holes in screens; caulk windows; install and repair window shades, venetian blinds and drapery rods. Repair furnishings and room interiors, including tighten door hinges; adjust or replace door closures; repair closet doors, beds and other furniture; repair floor tile, ceiling tile, storm doors, patio doors/rugs. Athletic, academic and special events set-up, clean up and tear down, including bleacher setups, scaffolding and ladders. Remove graffiti and other objectionable matter from buildings and grounds. Remove small animals (including bats) from inside and around buildings. Exercise judgment to determine when trades person should be called, especially in cases involving electricity, steam, gas or oil. Read diagrams to assemble furniture and equipment and occasionally works from blue prints

Standing, bending, stooping, walking, daily lifting of items that weigh 15-100 pounds. Will work around dust, fumes, and solvents. Install preventative insulation. Relamp fluorescent and incandescent lights. Board up broken windows. Hang picture, banners and signs. Painting, re-grouting, etc. under the direction of a skilled trades person. Assist other trades people as needed. Release people stuck in elevators and shut down if necessary.

Use a variety of hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, saws, etc. and some hand power tools such as drill and circular saws and hand/power snake. May operate a forklift and cube van. Work from ladders scaffolds and catwalks. Use proper safety equipment for removal of animals.
