Position Summary The West Virginia State Tax Division is seeking an entry‑level attorney ("Attorney 1") to join its legal team. Under the direct guidance of the managing attorneys, the chosen candidate will provide legal advice and representation on behalf of the agency. Once admitted to the Bar, the attorney may represent the Tax Division and the Tax Commissioner before the West Virginia Office of Tax Appeals for taxpayer petitions for refund and reassessment, and may also represent the agency regarding property tax valuations. Key Responsibilities Provide legal advice and representation on behalf of the agency, including representation before the West Virginia Office of Tax Appeals. Perform extensive legal research to respond to requests for information from taxpayers and other government entities. Draft letters, rulings, briefs, and other written responses to government agencies and professional organizations. Represent the agency regarding property tax valuations and provide guidance on the taxability of goods and services. Assist in drafting legislation and rules required to implement changes in tax code, and review and comment on proposed legislation and rules. Participate in litigation once proficiency is attained. Carry out related legal work as required. Qualifications Member of the West Virginia State Bar or admitted to the West Virginia State Bar within twelve (12) months of hire. Graduation from a regionally accredited or American Bar Association accredited law school. Valid driver’s license to accommodate intermittent travel. Ability to receive specific training before operating independently. Detailed work history is required. Special Requirements Admission to the West Virginia State Bar before the end of a probationary period which may not exceed twelve (12) months.
