MRI Technologist
Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin has a history of excellence. Founded more than 40 years ago, OAW has grown to become Wisconsin's premier, multi-physician orthopaedic practice. OAW physicians also share their knowledge, skills, and experience with the broader medical community through teaching and publishing at the local, regional, and national levels. OAW's medical and surgical services are complemented by PAs, nurses, and other health professionals.
The MRI Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. This role requires expertise in patient positioning, equipment operation, and safety protocols. Technologists collaborate closely with orthopaedic surgeons to ensure accurate imaging for diagnosis and treatment planning. Key responsibilities include preparing patients for procedures, ensuring the integrity of imaging protocols, maintaining equipment, and assisting in patient care. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential, along with a commitment to providing compassionate care in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform MRI imaging procedures on appropriate anatomical regions in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols.
- Complete and sign patient screening form and explain the procedure to the patient.
- Maintain patient care, comfort, and safety during the exam.
- Maintain technical competency through continued education.
- Under guidance and approval of physicians, administer contrast agents according to site-specific protocols.
- Cooperate with facility healthcare personnel and comply with facility policies and procedures.
- Maintain current permits to practice in all states in which services are performed.
- Provide images to the facility in the desired site format.
- Prepare release of information requests for patients and outside providers.
- Perform equipment quality checks and troubleshoot problems. Call for service and notify all pertinent team members.
- May assist with the set up and tear down of equipment in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines.
- Maintain a clean environment.
- Clean the MRI room to avoid infection and prepare for the treatment of future patients.
- Complete necessary administrative tasks.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Comply with all safety policies and regulations.
- Compliant with MRI safety.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Certified MRI Technologist
- Graduate of an approved two-year radiologic technology program
- Registered with American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or be registry eligible and possess a permit to practice where applicable.
- Valid, current, unrestricted Wisconsin state radiation operator certificate (with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions)
- CPR/AED certified
Skills and Requirements
- Able to interact with client personnel and team members in an autonomous, responsible, professional, and ethical manner.
- Produce high-quality special imaging with little supervision.
- Willing and able to assist the Radiologist in interpretation of exams.
- Function effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Flexible, reliable, and demonstrate sound judgment to ensure patient safety, confidentiality, and adherence to regulatory standards.
- Knowledge of medical anatomy and terminology.
- Detail orientated with excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills for documenting patient information, writing reports, and creating educational materials.
- Able to multi-task and maintain an efficient workflow.
- Willing to work flexible days and hours as needed.
- Solid knowledge of EPIC and McKesson PACs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for administrative tasks and communication.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Able to lift a minimum of 60 pounds and assist with patient maneuvering.
- The primary work environment is the MRI and X-ray department within the orthopedic hospital. This includes areas with imaging equipment, patient preparation rooms, and nursing stations.
- Frequent interaction with patients to prepare them for imaging procedures, provide care during the procedures and address any concerns or questions.
- The work environment can be fast paced, particularly during peak times or when handling multiple cases.
- Adherence to strict safety protocols due to frequent use of MRI and X-ray machines to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff.
