We are seeking a full-time Education Research Specialist responsible for supporting all relevant research program needs, responsibilities and future endeavors including managing research projects, consulting on curriculum development, training and mentoring staff and interns, and aiding future spaceflight opportunities. Of equal importance is the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all departmental areas across Space Center Houston. MAJOR RESPONSIBILTIES: Collaborate with the Manager of Scientific Research on all Research program and project needs including, but not limited to, coordinating new spaceflight missions, designing student outreach opportunities, supporting Space Center Houston exclusive events, and advancing new or ongoing normative data collection studies. Respond to any program requests or inquiries in a timely and professional manner, effectively coordinating with Space Center Houston personnel to meet deadlines and accomplish organizational goals and objectives. In collaboration with the Manager of Scientific Research and Chief Science Officer, contribute to the creation of new STEM content, demonstrations, workshops and exhibits, researching relevant topics to verify scientific accuracy. Oversee day-to-day operations of the science lab including equipment, supplies, research materials, documentation and workspace requirements. Identify operational needs, recommend improvements, coordinate equipment maintenance and calibration, and ensure lab practices are aligned with safety, ethics and research protocols. Develop laboratory specific training materials for staff and students to ensure compliance with safety and ethics protocols; mentor lab personnel and students in key lab skill areas. Maintain laboratory records and confidential research documents in accordance with federal regulations and safety/security requirements. Develop, review, and maintain laboratory standard operating procedures, protocols, training materials, and related documentation in collaboration with leadership and in accordance with applicable safety, ethical, and regulatory requirements. Identify opportunities to improve laboratory processes and recommend updates to procedures, workflows, and documentation to enhance safety, efficiency, and research quality. Provide support for grant applications and publications as needed. Serve as a knowledgeable resource about Space Center Houston’s scientific research efforts and the current goals of the Research program across the organization and with external partners, donors and other key stakeholders Help oversee the day-to-day operations of current guest-facing exhibits and maintain cloud-based collaboration tools. Attend and support Research program events when necessary. Assist in the development of new content and ideas for education relating to future NASA missions and ISS research studies. Stay abreast of relevant and significant aerospace achievements, advancements and current scientific studies taking place aboard the ISS. Perform duties and special projects as needed. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or related field. Master’s degree and/or background in computational biology or bioinformatics is strongly preferred. 3-5 years working in an active research environment. Previous experience(s) should include familiarity with standard safety practices and lab operations, staff training, SOP development, and project management. At least 1year working in an educational environment. Previous experience(s) should include methods used to build STEM identity, staff supervision and/or leadership roles, and curriculum/lesson development. Ability to learn new topics, technologies, research skills and scientific disciplines quickly and proficiently. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to identify and absorb critical information and find novel solutions when necessary. Highly effective interpersonal skills; must be able to successfully work with people of diverse backgrounds, professions and experiences. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to discuss complicated scientific concepts effectively to a wide range of audiences. Must be reliable and able to work independently with limited supervision. Knowledge of biomedical, biotech and human research practices, protocols and regulations. Familiar with IRB requirements and processes. Strong organizational skills; detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task. Enjoys engaging with scientists on the science itself; demonstrated passion for communicating scientific ideas and developing STEM confidence in audiences of all ages. A creative team player with a willingness to work hard and a commitment to excellence; able to contribute to projects outside their own area of expertise. Highly motivated and self-driven, with the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment. Computer skills using Microsoft Office365 with the capacity to learn new programs/systems/software efficiently. Having basic proficiency in Python, R or similar programming and experience with machine learning or other bioinformatic tools is preferred. Proven ability to propose research funding and previous publication experience is preferred. PHYSICAL ABILITIES/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory environment, including potential exposure to chemical, physical and biohazards. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on operational needs. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds occasionally (e.g., equipment, supplies, or materials). May be required to bend, stoop, reach, and climb stairs in the course of daily duties.
