SUMMARY: The Speech Language Assistant (SLPA) is responsible for providing targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student literacy and social engagement within the school environment. In collaboration with the supervision SLP, the SLPA provides student-specific recommendations that promote independence in accessing the learning environment (e.g., reading activities, group activities, community and vocational skills).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Supervise students and care for their physical, emotional health and safety, recognizing their worth, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships.
● Collaborate with Lead Teacher, Specialists (OTs, SLPs and BCBAs), and other classroom staff for creation and implementation of annual goals.
● Implement communication treatment programs created by the supervising SLP and collect data for each goal with fidelity
● Provide direct and indirect coaching for staff on communication goals on the IEP as directed by the supervising SLP
● Prepare therapy materials in collaboration with the Speech Language Pathologist, Lead Teacher, and Case Manager
● Assist the SLP with speech, language without clinical interpretation.
● Assist the SLP with assessments in preparation for Behavior Plans/IEPs and to assess ongoing progress, exclusive of administration and/or interpretation.
● Program and provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices as directed by the supervising SLP
● Attend and participate in IEP and conferences with the presence of the SLP.
● Attend all required training and meetings.
● Successful completion and certification in CALM training is required.
● Perform other duties assigned by the Speech Language Pathologist and Directors.

Education/Experience:
● A commitment to working with young people with developmental disabilities.
● Required: Bachelor's Degree and ASHA Certified as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant; Highly preferred: CDE certificate as an SLPA
● Experience working with children with developmental disabilities.
● Experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis.
● Minimum age of 21; maturity and reliability is a must.
● Good driving record and valid driver's license.
Certificates and Licenses:
Licensed by the Colorado Department of Education
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Computer/Technical Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software, Google Suite software and knowledge of data collection platform software.

This role operates in a classroom environment. This role routinely uses iPads, laptops, copy machines, walkie talkies. This job also requires driving staff and students into the community, interacting with community and vocational partners. This job involves activities with students and staff, including skiing, swimming, exercise routines, attending camp, and other active community outings. Extended or non-traditional work hours may sometimes be required. 20% local travel may be expected in this role. Noise level is low to loud. Staff should anticipate an environment that includes students in crisis (aggression, contact with bodily fluids, property destruction, screaming, self-injurious behavior).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to lift or carry up to 50 pounds, stand, run, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and sit in small chairs or on the floor. The employee is occasionally required to lift and carry up to 150 pounds, with help from another employee. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and use hands to manipulate large and small objects. The employee must be able to speak and hear (including whispers in loud environments). The employee must pass certification for verbal and physical crisis intervention training (Safety CAre). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
