Job Title: PhlebotomistJob Description The phlebotomist plays a key role in providing high-quality laboratory services by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and supporting efficient workflow in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role involves troubleshooting, participating in training, and making practical recommendations to improve processes while maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities + Perform venipunctures and other blood draws accurately and safely using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. + Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols. + Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and traceability. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols. + Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport. + Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following required temperature and handling procedures. + Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and ensure equipment and work areas remain clean and safe. + Update patient information accurately in laboratory or hospital systems and maintain organized records. + Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing. + Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and helpful manner. + Attend required annual department trainings and stay current with laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements. + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards. + Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and contribute recommendations to improve efficiency and quality in the laboratory. Essential Skills + Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. + Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. + 2-4 years of overall work experience, including experience in clinical or laboratory settings. + Proficiency in performing blood draws and venipuncture using both straight needles and butterfly needles. + Demonstrated experience labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, performing decontamination, and updating patient information. + Ability to collect and store specimens according to established laboratory procedures and protocols. + Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test requisitions or computer labels. + Capability to label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens in accordance with specific test orders. + Knowledge of proper specimen packaging and transport procedures, including maintaining required temperatures and using appropriate collection containers and tubes. + Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and related safety standards. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and communication tasks. + Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries. + High School Diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting with multiple priorities and time-sensitive tasks. + Comfort with answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to provide accurate information to patients and clinical staff. + Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions and adhere strictly to laboratory protocols. + Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, documentation requirements, and workflow steps. + Commitment to ongoing learning, including participation in annual department trainings and updates to procedures. + Customer service mindset with a courteous and patient-focused approach during specimen collection. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment where you handle blood and other clinical specimens while following strict safety, regulatory, and quality protocols. You will work with equipment such as centrifuges, specimen collection tubes, and computer systems for labeling and updating patient information, as well as standard office software like Microsoft Office Suite. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, including telephone-based communication to relay laboratory results and respond to inquiries. You will follow defined procedures for specimen handling, storage, and transport, including adherence to required temperatures and decontamination practices. Compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations is essential, and you will attend annual department trainings to stay current with safety and procedural updates. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Torrance, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.15 - $25.15/hr.
