The Federal Correctional Institution, McDowell is a medium-security federal prison for male offenders in southeastern West Virginia. It also has an adjacent satellite prison camp that houses minimum-security male offenders located in Welch, WV.

Overview:

To provide general dental services at FCI McDowell which include providing diagnostic evaluations and preventative and corrective treatment for the inmate population presenting with general dental problems as requested by FCI McDowell's medical staff. The duties will include, but are not limited to the following: 1) Making oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity, diagnosing and developing treatment plans for inmates requiring complex dental care. 2) Administrative duties include complete supportive paperwork to ensure compliance with BOPHealth Services Manual policies. 3) Treat simple and complex cavities including pin retained amalgams and composite restorations, posts and cores. (Inlays and crowns require Central Office approval prior to applying). 4) Aid in ordering dental supplies. 5) Provide root canal therapy on anterior and posterior teeth. 6) Perform simple and complex extractions, including surgical removal of tori and foreign bodies from dental tissue. 7) Institutes local and systematic therapy for chronic and acute oral infections. 8) Performs root planning, gingival curettage, and mucogingival surgery. 9) Provides dental prosthesis/acrylic partial dentures, cast partial dentures, full dentures, and limited acid etch bridges. 10) Manage inmate patients requiring special considerations during dental treatment. This includes inmates with asthma, emphysema, allergies, diabetes, hypertension, heart murmurs, pre and post (after 90 days) open heart surgery, and behavioral inmates undergoing psychiatric care. 11) Recommend pharmaceutical prescription drugs that are listed in the approved Bureau of Prisons Formulary. 12) Maintain appropriate documentation of services performed on federal inmate patients.

Requirements:

• Must hold a doctor of dental surgery or a doctor of dental medicine degree from an American Dental Association accredited college or university.
• Must have and maintain an active, valid unrestricted, current dental license (with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions) in a US jurisdiction. License must correspond to DEA registration number.
• Must possess a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number in order to write prescriptions for controlled substances.
• Must have one (1) year of experience performing clinical dentistry out of the last 18 months.
