Special Education Teacher

Elementary Special Education Teacher

An Elementary Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in grades K6. The teacher develops individualized educational programs, adapts curriculum, collaborates with staff and families, and helps students achieve academic, behavioral, social, and emotional success in accordance with Indiana Department of Education guidelines and federal special education laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Provide direct instruction in academic and functional skill areas
Adapt classroom materials, lessons, and assessments to meet student needs
Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, counselors, therapists, and parents
Maintain accurate student records, progress reports, and special education documentation
Conduct assessments and assist in evaluating student eligibility and progress
Support positive student behavior using classroom management and intervention strategies
Participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and professional development
Ensure compliance with IDEA, Article 7, and Indiana special education regulations
Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field
Valid Indiana teaching license in Special Education
Knowledge of IEP development and special education laws
Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
Ability to differentiate instruction and manage diverse learning needs

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with elementary-aged students
Experience with behavior intervention strategies
Familiarity with assistive technology and inclusive classroom practices

Physical Requirements:

Ability to supervise and assist students throughout the school day
Occasional lifting, bending, standing, or assisting students with mobility needs

Work Environment:

Elementary school setting
Collaboration with teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and families
May include resource room, inclusion classroom, or self-contained classroom settings

Salary and Benefits:

Salary based on district teacher contract and experience
