Instructor - Advanced Congenital Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
Medical College of Wisconsin
Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship
The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children's Wisconsin (CW), seeks a board certified/board eligible physician to join our expanding Division. We are comprised of nationally and internationally renowned, dedicated group of faculty and staff with a strong commitment to clinical care.
Position Highlights:
- Through the Forward Pediatric Alliance (FPA), a collaborative partnership between the Herma Heart Institute at Children's Wisconsin and UW Health Kids/American Family Children's Hospital, fellows benefit from two vibrant academic medical centers. The combined program includes five interventional cardiologists representing five distinct training backgrounds, providing a diverse and comprehensive educational experience, as well as a combined annual catheterization volume of approximately 650-700 cases.
- This position will be based primarily at Children's Wisconsin in Milwaukee. However, the fellow will be credentialed at both sites, allowing participation in catheterization procedures at the affiliated University of Wisconsin site in Madison (American Family Children's Hospital) and expanding exposure to a broader range of procedures and practice approaches.
- Clinical experience in the Children's Wisconsin catheterization laboratory is anticipated to average approximately three days per week.
- Additional catheterization laboratory experience in Madison is anticipated to average approximately one day per week. This experience may be tailored and expanded to accommodate particularly educational or complex cases, as agreed upon by the fellow and supervising physicians.
- Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in a weekly pediatric cardiology continuity clinic, supported by nursing staff, with independent responsibility for the management of general cardiology patients and progressive responsibility for the care of pre- and post-catheterization patients under the supervision of the attending interventional cardiologist.
- Current staffing includes a highly experienced physician assistant who is proficient in many of the clinical and procedural responsibilities assumed by the advanced interventional fellow and serves as an additional educational and clinical resource.
- Fellows will present cases and participate in weekly clinical care conferences and other multidisciplinary conferences as appropriate. They will also have opportunities to mentor general cardiology fellows in case preparation and presentation.
- Fellows will assist with after-hours cases, averaging approximately two times per week, and will be expected to remain available for emergent catheterization cases during off-hours based on a mutually agreed-upon schedule with the supervising team. Given the rarity and educational value of these cases, frequent participation is strongly encouraged. No general pediatric cardiology call responsibilities are anticipated during the fellowship year.
- Fellows are expected to develop and complete a scholarly project during the fellowship year. This project should result in submission of one or more abstracts to national scientific meetings and, ideally, form the basis for future peer-reviewed publication.
- Provide bedside and formal education to the students of the campus (whether medical students, residents or fellows) as deemed necessary by the supervising cardiology team.
- Other duties as assigned by Chair or Chair-Designate.
Schedule:
- 1.0 FTE
- Call ratio as described above
- Salaried (Exempt)
Department/Division Highlights:
The successful candidate will join a well-established, Advanced Congenital Interventional Cardiology team that includes five experienced congenital interventional cardiologists and a nurse practitioner along with a dedicated congenital cath team supporting two labs. This collaborative environment supports high-quality clinical care, programmatic growth, and ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
In addition to Congenital Interventional responsibilities, the candidate will be integrated into the Pediatric Cardiology Division within the Herma Heart Institute (HHI). Pediatric clinical roles and responsibilities will be tailored to the candidate's interests, training background, and institutional needs. The HHI represents one of the largest and most comprehensive congenital heart programs in the region, comprising three congenital heart surgeons, 30 pediatric and adult congenital cardiologists, eight pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, 11 pediatric intensivists, 22 advanced practice providers, and a total workforce exceeding 300 members.
The HHI also has a strong academic and research mission, with eight research-intensive principal investigators leading multiple active NIH-funded and equivalent projects, as well as a robust quality and outcomes program. Research activities are supported through the Children's Research Institute of Children's Wisconsin. In 2025, the HHI received more than $58 million in endowed funds through partnership with the Children's Wisconsin Foundation to support research, education, and clinical innovation, with a strategic emphasis on precision medicine and tissue engineering related to congenital heart disease.
Through the Forward Pediatric Alliance (FPA)a collaborative partnership between the Herma Heart Institute at Children's Wisconsin and UW Health Kids/American Family Children's Hospitalthe program benefits from a strong regional network and meaningful opportunities for cross-institutional clinical, educational, and research collaboration.
This position offers an exceptional opportunity for a motivated physician to join a dynamic and innovative team dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, and cutting-edge basic, clinical, and translational research.
Qualifications:
- Medical/Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, PsyD, or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
