Interpreter/Translator (Continuous Recruitment)

Interpreter / TranslatorUnder general supervision, enhances the success of Multilingual Learners; provides oral interpretation during meetings; provides translations of written materials and verbal exchanges; extends school and District efforts to reach out to families who require oral or written communication in a Primary Language other than English.Evidence of language proficiency in both English and a Foreign Language by completion of at least one of the following options in Education or Certification.EducationEvidence of language proficiency in both English and the Primary Language demonstrated by completing at least one option from the list below. Note: Only speaking and listening assessments are required for interpreters. Only reading and writing assessments are required for translators.For those applicants who would like to provide both interpretation and translation services, all four assessments are required. Costs associated with coursework and assessments are the responsibility of the applicant.Option 1: An official interpretation and translation certificate through proof of completion of a program offered by one of the following:American Translators AssociationCarolina Association of Translators & InterpretersUniversity of South Carolina Upstate - Professional Spanish, Interpreting in Educational SettingsUniversity of Georgia - Professional Interpreter in Education CertificateUniversity of Georgia - Professional Interpreter in Special EducationUniversity of Massachusetts Amherst - Online Certificate in Professional Translating and Interpreting.Option 2: Provide evidence of language proficiency in both English and the Primary Language by completing at least one item from each column below.English Primary Language Graduation from a college/university or Graduated from any 4-year university or graduate program in the United States. graduate program in the country of language origin.Pass the TOEFL assessment that includes four Pass the ACTFL Assessment of Performance sections (reading, writing, speaking, and Toward Proficiency in Languages in the Primary listening), with a score of 25 or higher on each of the four sections. etc.), with an overall score of Advanced.CertificationA valid SC teaching certificate and a valid SC teaching certificate in another language (Spanish, German, French, etc.).Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.Work ExperiencePrior experience in interpreting or translating in an educational setting preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesFluent in oral and written usage of both English and the Primary Language, including proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in English and the Primary Language furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or schedule form.Ability to record and exchange data and follow or deliver detailed verbal or written instructions.Knowledge of accurate record keeping techniques, customer service skills, telephone skills, and business etiquette.Proficient in the knowledge and use of Microsoft/Google suite.Essential DutiesProvides interpreting services in English and the Primary Language for parents, students, teachers, and administrators during parent/teacher conferences, school and/or District meetings, parent workshops, evening events at schools, and other activities where communication is required in both English and the Primary Language.Provides timely and accurate translating of District and school documents designed to inform parents such as written correspondence, announcements, calendars, notices, web page information, articles, flyers, newsletters, etc.Upon the request of a school/District official, contacts parents and families through phone calls and meetings at school or District sites to encourage participation in school/District activities.Works with the Multilingual Learners Program or other District divisions in need of language support to meet organizational objectives.Completes electronic time sheets (Richland Two employees) or contractor contracts (non- Richland Two employees) to document provided services and submits in a timely manner.Follows District procedures and maintains the confidentiality of student and family information.Participates in District interpreter/translator trainings.Demonstrates prompt, regular attendance and is available to work in-person during normal business hours, evenings, and weekends.Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.Physical Abilities and Working ConditionsVision: Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods of time.Hearing: Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone, computer, or virtual setting.Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers; twist and bend at wrist and elbows; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis.Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret, and apply information on a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a proficiency level appropriate to the position; sound judgment; the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understands and adequately manages stressful situations.Additional Work Conditions and Physical AbilitiesFlexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for parent, student, and/or community events; comfortable working at school sites.
