Trades Worker (Facilities Management)

Position Overview Under direction, the purpose of the position is to assist and perform general maintenance and repairs in the skilled and semi‑skilled trades, e.g., masonry, carpentry, flooring, electric, plumbing, irrigation, welding. Employees in this classification function at journey level and are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of general and preventative facilities maintenance and repair tasks to provide employees and the general public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient public buildings and structures. Employees perform duties with minimal supervision, utilizing knowledge and proficiency gained through training and experience in a diversity of trades work, and perform related work as directed. Responsibilities Assist with and perform installation, maintenance, and repair tasks in a variety of trade‑specific work to support the operation of facilities, buildings, and building systems. Perform carpentry work in the renovation, installation, and repair of buildings and facilities; build benches, lockers, cabinets, counter‑tops, banisters, walls for new office space, shelving. Install, replace, and repair a variety of building structures, flooring, ceilings, doors, window frames, interior trim, paneling, small roof sections. Perform minor plumbing repairs including replacing and repairing flushes, sinks, hand halls. Perform minor electrical repairs including replacing and repairing light fixtures, sidewalk lights, outlets, switches, and electrical flush valves. Move and arrange office furniture; mount wall hangings in offices; assist in the maintenance of landscape and public grounds; paint interiors and exteriors of buildings. Utilize a wide variety of manual, gas and electric powered hand tools, e.g., hammer, shovel, screw drivers, wrenches, digging bar, saws, drills, welders. Perform a variety of labor‑intensive work that may include exposure to difficult working conditions, e.g., extreme heat or cold, fumes, chemicals. Perform general maintenance and upkeep of tools, equipment, and machinery, e.g., lubricate, service, fuel; perform routine light maintenance and repairs; clean and maintain safe operation. Participate in work‑site safety set‑up, e.g., preps work areas; set barricades and cones; conduct traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards; flag traffic. Respond to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent injuries or otherwise hazardous conditions, i.e., fallen debris, spills, broken windows, broken locks. Perform duties as assigned or necessary that are related or logical in assignment to the position. Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED. Two (2) years responsible experience in a specific skilled trade (e.g., masonry, carpentry, flooring, electric, plumbing, air conditioning, irrigation, welding) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License. Qualifications & Abilities Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form and lead and carry out assignments with minimal instructions. Adhere to prescribed routines and practices. Knowledge of, and ability to utilize materials, methods, and equipment used in skilled and semi‑skilled trades. Skill in utilizing various handheld manual and electrical tools of the various trades. Perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic. Climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit and stand for extended periods of time; lift up to 50 pounds. Work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods; withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with department management, County employees, and the general public. Physical Demand Requirements Maximum lifting of 100 pounds. Frequent (up to two or three‑quarters of work time) lifting, carrying 50 pounds. Express or exchange ideas by spoken word or perceive sound by ear. Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others. Require physical agility in climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching. Require clear vision at near distances and distances of 20 feet or more.
