Psychiatrist – Lancaster, CA Position Details Full-time; 40 hours per week Location: Lancaster, CA Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 7:00 am–5:00 pm Rate: $275 per hour (approximately $11,000 per week) Employment status: Independent Contractor (1099) Qualifications Medical Doctor (M.D.) licensed by the Medical Board of California Board-certified by either the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (AOBNP) Responsibilities a. Meet with mentally ill inmate/youth for crisis interventions, face‑to‑face interviews, and other direct patient interactions; provide clinical interview at cell fronts; climb stairs and walk long distances in multi‑tiered housing units as needed. b. Conduct initial mental health evaluations including criminal, psychiatric, and substance abuse case history; assess inmate’s current needs and make treatment recommendations. c. Conduct suicide risk evaluations using clinical reviews, risk assessment protocols, relevant data/chart reviews, and documentation; consult as needed. d. Participate in Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDTT) meetings. e. Document all care provided, including face‑to‑face contacts and IDTT meetings. f. Monitor inmate progress using SOAPE‑formatted progress notes. g. Apply community standards of practice for psychiatric treatment modalities and ethical standards. h. Perform mental status exam (MSE) during clinical interviews. i. Identify signs and symptoms of medical/psychological disorders to diagnose, assess, and manage presenting symptomatology. j. Examine prior mental health records, institutional crime reports, probation reports, court records, and other documents to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning. k. Review and diagnose psychiatric patients of all ages; assess progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of treatment services. l. Consult with supervising psychiatrist on unusual, complex, or serious cases; present such cases at clinical conferences for advice or decision. m. Provide clinical consultation to psychiatric staff on complex or serious problems requiring technical expertise. n. Prescribe medication as deemed appropriate; adhere to the Correctional Formulary or obtain non‑formulary approval. o. Interpret laboratory results and refer to medical services as needed. p. Determine type of psychiatric and general medical treatment required. q. Prescribe changes in treatment when indicated. r. Adhere to mandated reporting requirements for suspected conditions, including child and elder abuse, duty‑to‑warn (Tarasoff), and other confidentiality mandates. s. Develop a therapeutic relationship with patient families and caretakers to enhance treatment delivery. t. Collaborate with primary care medicine to identify and manage co‑occurring, co‑morbid, and treatment‑related medical conditions. u. Make clinical rounds and review patient progress, including assessments in inmate housing units. v. Serve periodically as psychiatrist‑of‑the‑day for on‑call/call‑back during weekends and off‑hours; handle patient emergencies, Mental Health Crisis Beds follow‑up, and 5‑day follow‑ups. w. Administer psychiatric treatment with assistance from other healthcare providers as necessary. x. Maintain order and supervise conduct of committed persons to prevent escapes or injury to themselves or others. y. Wear personal protective equipment, clothing, and breathing apparatus to prevent injuries and exposure to blood/air‑borne pathogens. z. Participate in committees and Quality Improvement Teams. aa. Compile and analyze data from audits related to the mental health program requirements. bb. Provide appointment documentation, no‑show data, and other information to support staff for data entry. cc. Protect and maintain safety and security of property, including documentation of unusual occurrences and inventory control of psychological testing material, reference material, computers, and other equipment. dd. Offer input and help implement new programs for treatment, training, or rehabilitation of patient‑inmates/youths as directed by the CEO/CMH, Chief Psychiatrist, Senior Psychiatrist, or designee. ee.
