Overview Attorney – Eviction Defense Center (Multiple Positions) LAFLA is accepting applications for the position of Attorney with the Eviction Defense Center as part of the Stay Housed L.A. project, to support eviction defense resources for tenants in Los Angeles County and potentially contribute to a broader Right to Counsel effort. The Organization LAFLA is a nonprofit law firm that protects and advances the rights of the most underserved. Celebrating 95 years of service, LAFLA has more than 200 employees, including more than 100 attorneys, providing free services on a broad range of civil legal issues. The organization operates neighborhood offices, self-help centers at courthouses, and domestic violence clinics, and engages in impact litigation to expand access to justice. The Project: Stay Housed L.A. Stay Housed L.A. is a project to bring eviction defense resources to tenants and may be a step toward a Right to Counsel for eviction defense. The Eviction Defense Center will collaborate with internal and external eviction defense projects and a multi-organizational coalition. Responsibilities Litigate eviction cases in Los Angeles County Courthouses; Interview and counsel clients with housing problems; Participate in clinics and other community outreach projects; Work on policy issues relating to eviction and housing; Represent subsidized housing clients at administrative hearings and writs; Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Active membership in the California State Bar; Knowledge of landlord-tenant, housing law, and the eviction process preferred; Litigation experience preferred; Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals; Ability to work effectively in a high-stress environment and as part of a team; Ability to work with government agencies, staff, volunteers, students, attorneys, and community members; Excellent writing and public speaking skills; Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.0-hour workday, including evenings and weekends when necessary.
