Nurse

Adams County Regional Medical Center

Summary Under the direct supervision of the Surgical Services Manager, the Pre-Admission Nurse obtains pertinent medical history with the patient prior to admission via a phone interview as well as collects the patient’s medical history from previous medical records. The nurse also works closely with the anesthesia department in coordinating the patient’s needs. Responsibilities Practice appropriate telephone and patient triage skills, being aware of the need to balance quality care with efficient use of time and resources. Obtain pertinent medical history of patient prior to admission – in person or via telephone, communicating information to appropriate team members. Ensure pre-operative care requirements of patients are accomplished through use of the nursing process. Perform patient teaching/education as established by the department. Review pertinent information, implement, and document interventions and evaluate results. Maintain and promote patient’s safety by reviewing and observing physical and psychological needs and communicating information to appropriate team members. Respond to telephone inquiries regarding expressed needs of the caller. Perform outbound follow-up calls as requested. Provide general health information and special physician’s orders. Refer caller to appropriate resources including medical/ambulatory care, hospital services, and community services within established procedures and guidelines. Thoroughly document all call encounters utilizing manual and/or on-line information systems at the time of the call. Alert anesthesia of results of labs, prescribed medications, or special needs of individual with medical problems – prior to date of surgery. Answer inquiries in a timely and helpful manner. Communicate arrival time and NPO instructions to patients as prescribed. Document and report incidents according to procedure. Knowledgeable in surgical procedures, medications, anesthesia techniques to answer patient questions and give appropriate pre-operative instructions. Provide pre-operative instructions and emotional support to patient, family, and significant other. Communicate appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesia department concerning patient care. Complete patient charting in an accurate, concise, and timely manner. Demonstrate ability to prioritize patient needs. Attend staff meetings, educational and safety programs. Participate in quality improvement activities as requested. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications Education And/or Experience Minimum of a Diploma in Licensed Practical Nursing. At least 6 months to 1 year experience working as an LPN. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Maintains current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensure in the State of Ohio. Maintains current BLS. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk, hear or smell. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee will also be required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Frequent exposure to chemicals, blood and body fluids.
