Phlebotomist - Days

The Phlebotomist ensures proper collection of blood and non-blood samples by venipuncture and capillary puncture as applicable from outpatients and inpatients across all age groups. They prepare specimens for analysis by processing orders via HIS/LIS computers, verifying specimen acceptability, and performing established pre-analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner. Responsibilities Verify patient identification in accordance with VCU Health System Policy. Independently perform phlebotomy collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups (neonates to geriatrics). Collect non-blood specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum for testing. Administer oral solutions according to laboratory testing procedures. Stock supplies daily as needed. Perform data entry of test orders into the computer system. Process specimens according to standard operating procedures. Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers. Take calls after hours and on weekends on a scheduled basis based on primary site requirements. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Completion of a phlebotomy or medical assistant training program. Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record if required to drive between sites. Certification as a Phlebotomist from ASCP or other recognized certification agency (preferred). 0–3 years of experience in specimen collection techniques (venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collection). One year of experience in laboratory clerical and computer entry functions (preferred). May require weekend and/or holiday rotation based on primary site requirements. Working Conditions Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. May be exposed to physical altercations, verbal abuse, and the use of physical restraints. May be exposed to adverse weather conditions (cold, hot, dust, wind, etc.). May be required to travel to off-site locations in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to high noise levels, bright lights, and limited hazardous substances or body fluids. May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. May have periods of constant interruptions and prolonged periods of working alone. Physical Requirements Lifting/Carrying (0–50 lbs.), Push/Pull (0–50 lbs.), Push/Pull (50–100 lbs.) Stoop, kneel, squat, bending. Manual dexterity (eye/hand coordination). Perform shift work. Maneuver weight of patients. Hear alarms, telephone, tape recorder. Reach above shoulder. Repetitive arm/hand movements. Finger dexterity, color vision, acuity – far, vision acuity – near. Depth perception; use of latex gloves; exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals/detergents; exposure to moving mechanical parts; exposure to dust/fumes; exposure to high-pitched noises. Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving; hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking. Fast pace environment, steady pace, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, ability to adapt to frequent change.
