Police Officer (Lateral Transfer)

Position Overview The United States Capitol Police safeguards Congress, its members, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings from crime, disruption, and terrorism. This position supports the safe, secure, and open environment required for Congress to fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities. Core Requirements Must have completed one of the following training programs: FLETC UPTP; FLETA‑accredited military or equivalent police training; or CBP training programs (USBPI or CBPOPT). Certificate must be included with the application. Must currently be a law enforcement officer with at least 9 months of experience post‑training at the time of application and 52 weeks at the time of appointment. Must be employed outside of USCP at the time of application. Must be a United States citizen and possess a valid REAL ID U.S. driver’s license. Must meet the age requirements: at least 21 years old at appointment, normally not older than 37, with maximum entry age 39 (40 if the individual turns 40 in the same month as appointment). Retire by age 59 after 20 years of federal law enforcement service. Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must provide evidence of responsible driving within the past year. Male applicants must be registered for Selective Service; females are exempt. Travel for hiring assessments and training is at the applicant’s expense. Must successfully complete: a full field background investigation, polygraph, medical assessment, criminal, credit, and tax checks, and all required training. Must have a valid and unrestricted duty status at the time of application and appointment. Additional Qualifications Must pass a comprehensive criminal history check covering the past ten years. Must pass a credit check with no federal student loan default or delinquency. Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor domestic‑violence crime are ineligible due to firearm possession restrictions. Fingerprint checks will be conducted through the FBI. All eligibility information must be truthful; intentional withholding or misrepresentation will result in disqualification. Selection Process Examination Phase : Includes psychological, medical, and polygraph examinations conducted during a single visit to the Washington, D.C. office. Psychological assessments will occur online and require a computer, camera, and microphone. Candidates should be well‑rested and, if applicable, fast before the medical exam. Background Investigation : A thorough review of employment history, references, criminal and credit history, and academic records. Probationary period upon successful appointment.
