About the Role The Fiber Splicer Technician installs, maintains, and repairs our fiber optic infrastructure, from outside plant cabling and hardware to fusion splicing and transport equipment. Reporting to the Manager, Splicing Operations, this role is a hands-on, field-based position within our Splicing Operations team, working across manholes, hand holes, and job sites throughout our service area. The technician coordinates closely with excavators, utility representatives, and internal teams to protect underground facilities while executing plant changes and extensions safely and accurately. What the Role Involves Installing, maintaining, and repairing the company’s fiber infrastructure Installing and repairing wiring, cabling, and hardware required to support fiber-based and other company communications services Installing and maintaining fiber optic networking and transport hardware Executing changes in plant conditions, as well as minor plant changes and extensions Communicating effectively with excavators, utility representatives, and company personnel regarding underground facilities, using assigned equipment Performing light excavation with a shovel to expose buried cables, when necessary Operating and maintaining HESCO (manhole assistance trailer), ladders, and hand and power tools Following, supporting, and enforcing internal control processes and procedures, and observing company safety policies at all times Learning and applying safety measures relating to motor vehicle operations and other field-related matters Contributing to various projects with minimal supervision, including aiding other departments and team members, as directed What We're Looking For A vital interest in contributing to the success of the company’s goals and strategic vision Competency and experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to work with cloud-based and mobile technology Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills Eagerness to adapt existing processes to new, improved systems Excellent organizational skills, time management, initiative, attention to detail, and follow-through to completion Ability to multi-task and accomplish tasks in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision Ability to effectively collaborate cross-functionally with other teams, as well as customers and contractors Extensive fusion splicing experience, including small- to large-scale splicing repairs (up to 1728 fiber count), with Loose Tube and Ribbon splicing experience required Extensive knowledge of telecommunications concepts, FTTH, fiber optic, and transport systems Ability to review and comprehend cable drawings and engineering designs, and identify underground cable infrastructure Ability to install and troubleshoot DWDM carrier-grade circuits Ability to troubleshoot networking systems using experience and test equipment Fluency in universal communications color code for both copper and fiber infrastructure Fluency in operating test equipment used to maintain fiber optic facilities and subscriber drops (TDR, OTDR, fiber scopes) Minimum of 5 years of experience in installation, maintenance, splicing, and troubleshooting of fiber-based outside plant infrastructure and networking systems Ability to see and distinguish distinct colors, read small print, and hear/recognize audible signals Ability to safely use step and extension ladders (up to 25 ft.) or other elevated equipment, as appropriate (e.g., catwalks, cell tower platforms, rooftops, man lifts, bucket trucks) Ability to work in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather conditions and at various hours of the day or night Valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record Nice to Have Industry certification such as CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician), CFOS/S, or a BICSI credential Hands-on experience with specific fusion splicer brands (e.g., Fujikura, Sumitomo, Corning) Aerial construction and splicing experience, including strand-mounted closures and bucket truck work CDL or specialized vehicle endorsement, with the ability to operate bucket/boom trucks and tow and maneuver a splice trailer Bilingual in English and Spanish Familiarity with utility locate and permitting processes (e.g., Sunshine 811) Experience mentoring or training junior technicians Working Conditions Availability to respond to after-hours callouts, and to work overtime, shifts, weekends, and holidays as required, remaining in service during outages until resolved Outdoor working environment with exposure to seasonal heat, cold, and other inclement weather conditions Driving a company-assigned vehicle to and from work sites in a safe and responsible manner during adverse weather conditions, heavy or light traffic, or at night Working at or near active roadways and vehicular traffic, requiring the use of traffic control devices, signage, and safety protocols to protect both team members and the public Work sites include manholes, hand holes, and similar locations, and will involve extensive walking on various terrain, working around objects and machinery in construction areas, and may require confined space entry and the ability to work in elevated areas Wearing and maintaining all personal protective equipment (PPE) required for this role and job site, including eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toed boots Exposure to loud noise from construction equipment, machinery, and tools, requiring the use of hearing protection as appropriate Regular use of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools;
