About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: ICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hours Day Shift Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum of 1 year in ICU License: Active RN License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Experience with vents, arterial lines, PICC lines, ports, chest tubes, drains, wounds, ostomies, OG, NG, PPE, identifying arrhythmias, cardioversions, transesophageal echocardiograms, post-heart catheterization patients, defibrillation, and pain management. Description: This is an ICU unit with 10 private beds. The nurse to patient ratio is typically 1:2, and may occasionally be 1:3 if the acuity is low. Depending on the census, staffing for 15-18 patients occurs on the floor. At least 2 ICU RNs will be present on each shift. Common diagnoses include diabetic ketoacidosis, COVID-19, congestive heart failure, motor vehicle accidents, cerebrovascular accidents, sepsis, overdose, and general medical conditions. Pediatric patients are rarely present; pediatric RNs will take care of them if necessary. If a pediatric patient requires a ventilator, an ICU RN will manage it. Experience with ventilators is required. RNs are required to titrate drips. Common titratable or set-rate drips include insulin, levo, cardizem, dopamine, dobutamine, TPA, heparin, amiodarone, Lasix, and sedation drips. A charge nurse will take patients during shifts, and a house supervisor is available in-house. There are nursing aids on the unit. The ideal staffing ratio is 2 staff for every 16 patients. A hospitalist is present in-house 24/7, while an intensivist is available during the day. Respiratory Therapy is not on-site 24/7 but is available in-house around the clock. Equipment used in the ICU includes ventilators, CPAP, and BiPAP. Telemetry technicians are present on the unit, but RNs must read their own strips using Philips telemetry monitors. Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours, from 7 am to 7 pm, with no self-scheduling available. Traveler nurses will be accommodated as much as possible regarding block scheduling. Weekend requirements typically occur every third weekend, but flexibility is encouraged based on staffing needs. Holiday requirements include working every third holiday, particularly during winter. There is no call or standby requirement; additional shifts will only be requested if a change is needed. Floating to include PCU and occasionally to MedSurg is required; full patient assignments will be taken when floating MedSurg at a staffing ratio of 1:5-6. Scrubs should be any solid color without designs, and natural hair colors are acceptable.
