Summary About the Position: This position is located within the Military Correctional Complex and requires frequent, direct contact with inmates. The duty hours are Tuesday - Friday 1230 - 2130 and Saturday 0700-1600. This position has been designated as primary/rigorous and is eligible for Law Enforcement (LEO) retirement coverage. The maximum entry age for positions covered under this retirement is 37 years old. Responsibilities As a Recreation Specialist, you will be responsible for the following: Plan and administer a comprehensive sports program for the USDB, JRCF and Trusty Unit. Adapt various activities to the wide range of inmate interests, needs and limitations. Ensure the sports program complies with the American Correctional Associate (ACA) standards and with all applicable correctional standards for safety and security. Monitor recreation areas and ensure tools, etc. are accounted for and to ensure proper security and safety of inmate Provide training on the proper use of equipment and safety techniques as it relates to the various sports activities. Coordinate all activities and schedules to ensure compliance with security requirements and adequate correctional staff support. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes adapting or developing recreation program activities to meet the divergent needs of an inmate population and conducting classes and training coaches, participants, and/or official for various sports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: general recreation or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., institutional); or physical education. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
