Hemodialysis Technician

To provide patient care and support to adult dialysis patients according to established policy/protocol under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Supports Michigan Medicine’s commitment to quality and safety, including patient satisfaction and actively participates in process improvement activities.

General supervision is received from Clinical Nursing Director (CND) and/ or Clinical Nursing Supervisor. Functional supervision is received from nursing staff.

Responsibilities*

• Welcome patients into the unit and check two patient identifiers with armband (full name and birthdate)
• Ambulate, move, lift, transfer, and transport patients
• Assist patients with bedpans, urinals, and personal hygiene
• Conduct hemodialysis machine safety checks according to unit policy/procedure
• Obtain necessary pre-, intra-, and post-treatment vital signs and weight
• Place patient on cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, oxygen and suction as needed; have knowledge of respiratory equipment
• Under the supervision of an RN, initiate, monitor and terminate hemodialysis
• Aseptically prepare the hemodialysis machine according to prescription
• Assist with lab draws, labeling and sending to the lab
• As directed by the RN, monitor patients throughout hemodialysis treatment, including patients’ response to hemodialysis, vascular access site and pressures, and visibility of patients’ face and access
• Discontinue hemodialysis treatment according to unit approved policies/procedures
• Hold AVF/AVG needle sites post-treatment or perform catheter care per unit policy
• Evaluate patient post-treatment
• Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings for needles or catheter
• Evaluate patient prior to discharge
• Perform lab draws and/or dressing changes at the bedsidePerform and document pre- and post-hemodialysis evaluation including weight and vital signs
• Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition to the RN
• Prime continuous renal replacement (CRRT) machines
• Drain peritoneal dialysis patients at the direction of the unit charge RN
• Utilize transportation tracking system and input patients
• Other duties as assigned

Assist multidisciplinary team members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate, including disease process, access, online clearance monitoring, adequacy monitoring program and urea kinetic modeling.

Maintain environmental integrity by assuring all areas are safe and clean

Maintain patient care area daily by stocking supplies in the bedside carts and storage cabinets

Perform all required pre-treatment hemodialysis machine alarm testing

Conduct daily routine checks of point of care (POC) devices and conductivity meters as assigned by charge nurse

Accurately operate POC laboratory equipment and conductivity meters

Clean and disinfect hemodialysis machine surface, equipment, back ledge and surrounding area between treatments according to unit policy

Disinfect hemodialysis equipment including hemodialysis machines and portable reverse osmosis equipment according to unit policy

Clean CRRT machine surfaces when CRRT treatments are terminated

Ensure all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to unit policy

Prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent waste

Other duties as assigned

Appropriately document, within scope of practice, all treatment information accurately in the electronic health (EHR) record in a timely manner

Appropriately document machine disinfections and POC testing

Required Qualifications*

• Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certification as a Hemodialysis Technician from the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) or Certification as a Clinical Hemodialysis Technician from the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission.
• This position requires Primary Source Verification.

Desired Qualifications*

1. Basic Life Support (BLS) certified 2. Experience with EHR documentation 3. Knowledge of MM policies and procedures 4. Excellent communication skills

5. Minimum one (1) recent hemodialysis experience 6. Ability to stand for long periods of time 7. Ability to perform at a fast pace, and lift/push heavy equipment 8. Ability to lift, move and position patients

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

10-hour rotating shifts; 1500-0130 or 1900-0530. Requires rotation of Saturdays and Sundays.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
