Medical and dental health plans Short and long term disability coverage Paid life insurance 11 paid holidays per year plus vacation and sick leave Wellness program, tuition reimbursement, training opportunities and more Visit State of Colorado Employee Benefits for more information Description of Job Supervises, guides, and directs professional skilled nursing care for the incarcerated offender in any outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house setting for acute care, chronic support and emergency assessment and intervention as indicated May act as unit supervisor for a smaller clinic, shift within a larger complex facility, or specialized clinical treatment unit May be required to work any shift, weekends and holidays, and perform nurse on‑call or call‑back duties Documents both handwritten or electronically in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive inmate medical records Delivers patient education including demonstrating self‑care techniques, anticipating possible complications, informing about medication side effects, and listening to offender concerns Delivers patient care in a clinic, infirmary or specialized cell house setting individualized to offenders' diagnoses and needs Performs routine and emergency physical and emotional assessments of inmates during triage, sick line, and emergency situations using basic nursing skills, physical assessment skills, and nursing protocols Promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control Responsible for payroll, scheduling, and Performance Management Plans (PMP); accountable for completion of shift responsibilities for 8–16 hours per day; point person for daily operations and decisions; assigns nursing staff, coordinates staff orientation, rearranges unit routines, assists in hiring, participates in promotional examinations and disciplinary recommendations Recommends, implements, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures; functions as an on‑call supervisor and arranges for coverage and approves overtime Minimum Qualifications Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) Applicant must have three (3) years of full‑time experience providing patient care as a Registered Nurse. Work experience less than full time will be prorated Substitutions A bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute for one year of the required experience. DOC does not provide H‑1B sponsorship Successfully pass all modules of the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics: lift arms above head, kick to waist, stabilize another person for controlled takedown, use arms/palms/shins/feet to deliver blows, withstand impact, swing a baton, rotate body 90 degrees, get down on knees and rise repeatedly Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and while on assignment Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury Demonstrate bodily agility, strength of all four limbs, and ability to walk and climb stairs consistently Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control or restraint situations Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing a congenial, personable manner Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey assignments Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature, possible inclement weather, and concrete floor/wall settings Willing and able to travel Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyard (nights) with rotating shift schedule TB screening required of all new employees upon hire The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol.
