Custodian TITLE: Custodian DEPARTMENT: Administration REPORT TO: Administrative Services Director SALARY RANGE: 1 CLASSIFICATION: 7 STATUS: Non‑Exempt Position Job Summary The Custodian maintains a clean, safe, and inviting environment for Agency customers and employees. The Custodian performs a wide variety of routine cleaning and maintenance needs for the office building(s) and other assigned sub‑offices as outlined within the job description. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Education may be waived with significant job‑related experience. Experience: Less than 1 year. Authorization: Valid Driver’s License; BCA Background Study. Work Environment: Conventional – Office model. Skills, Abilities, & Other Knowledge Skills: Excellent oral and/or written communications skills. Ability: Ability to manage time that results in both a satisfactory quantity and quality of work. Ability: Support the Mission of the Agency through daily work and while representing the Agency in public. Ability: Have general knowledge of programs and activities of the Agency. Ability: Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member. Ability: Must be able to handle diverse work problems on a daily basis. Ability: Must be able to organize a work schedule, set priorities and work effectively to meet deadlines without supervision. Ability: Must be able to adjust to changes necessitated by last‑minute assignments and deadline requests that may prove stressful. Ability: Ability to effectively work across differences, especially socio‑economic and cultural differences. Attend trainings, classes and meetings as necessary to improve job skills and maintain an acceptable level of job performance. Serve as a mentor for new staff. Other Knowledge: Have knowledge and apply Agency policies and procedures, including safety, technology, data practices and other applicable policy, procedure and program regulations. Other Knowledge: Understand numbers and mathematical concepts. Other Knowledge: Working knowledge of construction/rehabilitation/energy efficiency and building science. Other Knowledge: Knowledge of Community resources. Primary Duties & Responsibilities This job description is not intended to be all‑inclusive and the employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned. Area 1: Program Operations Keeps building and property in clean and orderly condition. Performs routine maintenance activities. Complete Custodial Work Requests Forms by priority when provided by Administrative Services Director. Ability to articulate and carry out appropriate emergency procedures. Keep sidewalks and awnings, in front and back of facility, clean, swept and clear of ice, snow and debris. Sweeps, mops, or scrubs floors daily. Cleaning linoleum/tiled floors by buffing and waxing as needed. Clean and sanitize restrooms daily. To include: mopping floor, cleaning sink and toilet, and replenishing soap, paper towels, and toilet paper as needed. Emptying of waste and recycling baskets daily. Vacuum and cleaning (shampooing as needed) carpeted floors daily. General cleaning and maintenance to include: washing walls, dusting, washing tables and chairs, cleaning windows and partitions. General maintenance of building to include: exterior walls, doors and locks, handrails, roof, light repair, painting, etc. Cleaning of parking lot area; ground keeping maintenance. Cement surface maintenance. Maintaining building equipment and furniture, such as furnaces, air conditioning units, desks, shelves, files cabinets, etc. Oversee the maintenance of cleaning equipment. Assist Department Administrative Director in maintenance of fire extinguishers according to OSHA Regulations. Manages inventory of cleaning supplies, notifying Administrative Service Director of needed supplies. Pick up of supplies as needed, following all Agency policies. Notifies Department Administrative Director regarding the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems. Delivery of recyclable materials as needed (cans, fluorescent lighting, etc.). Monthly safety checks of emergency lighting and safety alarm system(s). Trimming of trees and shrubbery. Assist Department personnel in loading/unloading supplies. Work in fairly strong cleaning odors and solutions for short periods of time. Work outdoors in extreme climates as needed for grounds and/or building maintenance. Area 2: Program Compliance Maintenance of Custodial MSDS book and maintenance records as required. Notify supervisor of any necessary updates. Area 3: Program Communications Alerts supervisor of any safety concerns identified in the building or on the grounds. Informs supervisor of potential problems dealing with procedures, policies and/or employee concerns. Area 4: Development Assistance Maintain and update Custodial Procedural Manual/file. Job Factors Supervision of Others Not responsible for supervision of others. Safety of Others Responsible for the physical safety of the public served. Provides front‑line response to public safety and/or health threats. Provides input into safety policies and procedures. Contacts Contact is within own department, and with other departments, customers, vendors, or the public. Physical Demand Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Requires sitting, standing, bending, stooping and reaching. Physical ability to operate equipment specific to your position. Travel Must have reliable transportation. Must have valid driver’s license and current auto insurance coverage in compliance with Minnesota State guidelines on the vehicle used for work‑related travel. Travel for completion of job duties, trainings and meetings as required.
