Summary: The clinical dietitian is responsible for providing medical nutrition therapy to inpatients and selected outpatients. The clinical dietitian works closely with the dietetic technicians, nurses, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
Responsibilities:
- Follows departmental policies and procedures.
- Is flexible with work schedule.
- Willingly accepts direction and performs other duties as assigned.
- Participates in training new hires.
- Instructs patients/families on diets, emphasis on survival skills.
- Conducts in-services for nurses/other healthcare staff as requested, or as need indicates.
- Attends team conferences in assigned areas, contributes meaningful information, follows up on nutrition related issues.
- Provides clinical nutrition experiences for dietetic interns and other students.
- Strives to maximize patient satisfaction with meals, conducts 1 meal round/day. Proactively resolves foodservice related issues as they arise with assigned patients.
- Participates in nutrition education endeavors - medical grand rounds, cafeteria displays, National Nutrition Month, etc.
- Maintains Computrition with appropriate information to aid in the nutrition care of patients.
- Communicates with diet tech and nutrition assistants on unit/patient issues in areas of patient care responsibility.
- Conducts nutrition screening on assigned patients within 24 hrs. of admission.
- Assesses patients at high nutritional risk, re-assesses patients as their conditions change. Physician ordered assessments are completed within 24 hrs. of order, all others are assessed within 48 hrs. of screening.
- Develops nutrition care plans using established nutritional standards of care.
- Documentation in medical record reflects multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
- Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned by clinical nutrition manager, conducts peer review of the quality of nutrition assessments and completes an audit of the timeliness of nutrition screening.
- Treats patients of all age groups and is knowledgeable about developmental needs over the lifespan and where appropriate, incorporates findings of nutrition/teaching needs into individualized care plans.
- Attends mandatory staff meetings, completes ICare modules 2 wks. prior to evaluation.
- Reports any equipment malfunctions
- Manages time efficiently.
- Runs Computrition reports/programs accurately and according to schedule.
