System Administrator

Responsibilities Administers technology infrastructure, software, and systems supporting the research and administrative activities of the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM). Manages web services for ICERM and related organizations including mathinstitutes.org and simonscollab.icerm.brown.edu. Implements and maintains A/V, lecture capture, and video conferencing systems. Supports the implementation and maintenance of cloud‑based platforms, SaaS and DaaS systems. Performs Linux administration, manages server technologies, load balancing, LDAP, TLS, and other networking concepts. Works with content management systems, web application frameworks, Python and shell scripting, and version control (Git/Github). Provides support for multimedia presentations, lecture capture, and IP‑based video conferencing systems. Assists users in a research environment by generating user‑friendly solutions quickly, working independently or in a team. Exhibits strong interpersonal and customer‑service skills when interacting with local, national and international customers. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in technology, computer science or a related field. 2 to 3 years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Experience with web application development environments. Technical support experience, especially in higher education. Experience with multiple platforms (Linux, macOS, Windows) in server and client implementations. Linux administration skills and related certifications. Knowledge of cloud‑based platforms, SaaS and DaaS systems. Experience with content management systems and web application frameworks. Proficiency with Python and/or shell scripting. Proficient in Git/Github or similar version control software. Working knowledge of server technologies, networking concepts, load balancing, LDAP, TLS, Knowledge of multimedia presentation, lecture capture, IP‑based video conferencing systems, and high‑performance computing. Strong ability to understand user requirements and produce solutions quickly. Independent and team working skills in a complex environment with competing demands. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills in a research environment. Fixed‑term position with current end date 8/31/2030 (may be extended depending on funding). 37.5 scheduled weekly hours (full time) with occasional night and weekend hours as required by ICERM event schedule.
