Supervisory Dentist

Summary The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System is seeking Supervisory Dentist for the South Enterprise VA Clinic in Corpus Christi, TX. The Supervisor serves as a practicing dentist performing a full range of general dental procedures for commonly encountered dental diseases, conditions, and restorative needs. Learn more about this agency Duties Help The Supervisory Dentist is knowledgeable in all disciplines of general dentistry and performs duties within their approved scope of practice as established through the credentialing and privileging process. Clinical Duties:
- Patient Care
- Conducts oral and radiographic examinations.
- Administer local anesthesia.
- Diagnoses pathological and irregular oral conditions.
- Performs restorative dentistry, including routine and complex restorations.
- Performs routine endodontic procedures.
- Conducts prosthodontic procedures including complete dentures, partial dentures, crowns, and fixed
- bridges.
- Performs simples and complex extractions, alveoloplasty, and routine surgical procedures.
- Provides periodontal evaluation and non-surgical periodontal therapy.
- Provides orthodontic evaluation and referrals when indicated.
- Demonstrates Proper infection control procedures.
- Ensures assigned personnel comply with all infection control standards.
- Completes mandatory annual infection control training.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Ensures staff compliance with documentation, electronic record use, and VA policies.
- Protects sensitive data from loss or unauthorized access.
- Adjusts care based on patient age and abilities.
- Ensures proper patient identification and time-out procedures.
- Monitors patient condition during treatment and responds appropriately.
- Completes mandatory patient safety training.
- Meets annual continuing educations and mandatory training requirements.
- Supports the training and competency maintenance of assigned staff.
- Supervisory and Administrative Duties and Assigned Personnel:
- Provides daily oversight and coordination for assigned dentists, hygienists, and/or dental assistants.
- Reviews work products for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Offers technical guidance on dental procedures, materials, and techniques.
- Assists with onboarding and kill development of new staff.
- Assists in developing performance plans for assigned staff.
- Completes mid-term and annual proficiency reports when delegated.
- Identifies training needs for staff and supports professional development.
- Provides coaching and redirection when necessary.
- Helps maintain appointment access and clinic flow.
- Partners with Dental Service Chief in requirements of the dental service.
- Monitors staff compliance with documentations and scheduling standards.
- Identifies equipment and supply needs and communicates them with leadership.
- Supports adherence to VHA Scheduling Directives.
- Reviews assigned consults and request for service in a timely manner.
- Designates a person to act in his/her absence so that administrative direction is provided.
- Ensures compliance with VHA, VISN, and facility policies.
- Participates in Joint Commission, IG, and other accreditation activities.
- Supports Peer Review, quality improvement initiatives, and RME/Infection control programs.
- Ensures assigned personnel follow applicable regulatory and safety standards.

- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements ( Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

- A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
- Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
- Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in comprehensive dental care, including treatment planning, diagnosis, and management of complex cases within an outpatient or hospital based setting.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience directing dental staff, overseeing clinical operations, mentoring providers, and ensuring adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Experience working within interdisciplinary healthcare teams, collaborating with medical, surgical, nursing and ancillary services to support integrated Veteran centered care.
- Proven ability to ensure compliance with VHA policies, infection control standards, patient safety requirements, documentation expectations, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participation in or leadership of performance improvement, process redesign, or clinical program development, demonstrating the ability to enhance patient outcomes, efficiency, or clinic productivity.
