Ultrasound Technologist (Full Time)

Position Summary Under the direction of the radiologists and the supervision of the Imaging Services Cardiopulmonary Director, the Ultrasonographer utilizes high frequency ultrasound to produce images for OB/GYN, abdominal, peripheral vascular, carotid doppler and small parts studies. Recognizes significance of all structures visualized. Differentiates artifact from normal or pathologic processes. Recognizes equipment limitations. Job Requirements Education, Required Licenses/Certifications: Must be a graduate of an American Medical Association approved school of ultrasonography. Must be registered by the ARDMS in either abdominal or OB/Gyn (both preferred). Work Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Training and/or experience specific to ultrasound/radiology practices regarding neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients is required. Minimum of one year of ultrasound experience required, three years preferred. Proven ability to interact effectively with patients, co-workers, practitioners, and visitors is required. Willingness to work in team-oriented environment is necessary. Effective communication skills are required. Ability to work independently. Familiarity with Meditech Health Information System is preferred. Familiarity with computer applications required. Must have technical aptitude and a willingness to learn software applications used at AVH. Contacts Patients, providers, staff, and regulatory agencies. Under the direction of the radiologists and the supervision of the Director of Imaging Services, utilizes high frequency ultrasound to produce images for OB/GYN, abdominal, peripheral vascular, carotid doppler and small parts studies. Recognizes significance of all structures visualized. Differentiates artifact from normal or pathologic processes. Recognizes equipment limitations. Utilizes the ultrasound unit and other pieces of equipment to produce images in accordance with Hospital, departmental, regulatory and industry standards. Maintains proficiency on all equipment within this scope of practice. Properly introduces him/herself to the patient and makes them feel welcome. Reviews practitioner’s orders, then performs the appropriate test(s). Prepares patients for examinations, correlates clinical history with procedure to be performed, explains procedure and properly scans patients for the exams ordered. Chooses correct technical factor for each patient and exam. Assesses the patient for risk or potential of neglect or abuse. Makes referrals as appropriate. Reports complaints of pain to appropriate medical personnel. Assists Radiologist with special procedures (e.g. u/s guided biopsies, fine needle aspirations, etc.) Maintains diagnostic equipment in proper working condition. Assures the proper recording of patient charges for the purposes of billing. Appropriately utilizes and maintains the glutaraldehyde soak station to disinfect endo-cavity probe. Retrieves patient film jackets containing relevant prior exams for the Radiologist to review. Maintains proficiency in the use of the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communicators System), the RIS (Radiology Information System) and other associated systems. Verifies that studies are appropriately and accurately stored using these electronic systems. Demonstrates technical aptitude. Is familiar with computer applications. Is willing to learn software applications. Non-Essential Functions Assures adequate inventory of supplies. Participates in the provision of in-service activities to Hospital staff and/or community. Participates in the orientation and training of new technologists. Assists in the development and revision of departmental policies and procedures upon request. Routinely reviews orders for the next day’s room assignment to make sure all orders are present and that supporting documents are available prior to patient arrival. Work practices, service standards and relationships with co-workers demonstrate an ownership role in the success of the department. Makes use of key words at key times (where applicable) to manage patient expectations, anxieties, and desires for Performs additional duties as assigned. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
